Sturgeon Records Career-High 16 Kills as Eagles Sweep Delaware State

DOVER, Del. -- Sophomore Denali Sturgeon recorded a career-high 16 kills and Coppin State tied the school record for conference wins in a season with a 25-21, 25-16, 25-18 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference victory over Delaware State on Friday in Memorial Hall.

With the win, Coppin State improved to 10-15 overall and 6-4 in the MEAC. The Eagles, who have won three straight and four of the last five matches, tied last year's team for the most conference wins in school history.

Sturgeon, who has double-figure kills in each of the last two matches, finished with 16 kills and a .560 attack percentage. She also had two digs and two blocks.

Ariel Richard added 10 kills and 11 digs to finish with a double-double for the second straight match.

Richard, Nicole Malave and Jasmine Burton each had 11 digs to lead Coppin State. Chelsee Sauni had 40 assists directing the Eagle offense as CSU posted a season-high .386 attack percentage.

Delaware State (2-19, 0-9 MEAC) was led by Jessica Russell-Croucher who had 12 kills, while Edarkis Branch and Jasmine Jackson had 10 kills each.

North Carolina A&T can’t slow down Florida A&M

GREENSBORO – The North Carolina A&T volleyball team put up a great effort but it wasn’t enough as they fell 3-1 to Florida A&M (25-13, 17, 29-27, 12) in a MEAC match Friday evening at Moore Gymnasium.

The Rattlers (12-6 overall, 7-0 MEAC) dominated the first two sets as they surged to large leads. The Aggies battled in the third set to take their first set from FAMU since 2005.  

Te'Borah Hawkins-Hollingsworth and Brooke Stamnes led the Aggies with nine kills. Liz Martino finished with a team-leading 25 assists.

North Carolina Central outlasts Bethune-Cookman in five-set thriller

DURHAM, N.C.  – Four Eagles finished with double-doubles while the North Carolina Central University volleyball team snapped its two-match losing streak with a five set (21-25, 17-25, 25-23, 25-23,19-17) win over the Bethune-Cookman University Wildcats on Friday, Nov. 1 in Durham, N.C.

Senior Kalin Russell led the way offensively for the Eagles finishing with a season-high 18 kills, 10 digs, six blocks and one service ace. Also earning a kill/dig double-double was junior Da’sha Brown who earned 10 kills and 14 digs while seizing an additional two service aces.

The setting duo of sophomore Melissa Rabell Pineiro and junior Alice Genna also added double-doubles for the Eagles. Rabell Pineiro led the way with 19 digs, while also dishing 14 assists and Genna collected a team-high 26 helpers and 10 digs.

Also contributing to the Eagles offense was junior Ashley McCarthy who grasped a team second-best 13 kills while also adding six digs and four blocks and rookie Kelsey Murphy finished with double-digit digs, contributing 10, with eight kills and one block.

In the five-set victory, NCCU turned 167 attempts into 59 kills on 28 errors, served four service aces, dug 77 Wildcat attempts and collected twelve team blocks.

The Wildcats were led by Delicia Pierre who collected a game-high 21 kills, 15 digs and two blocks, Alexas Thomas who dished 45 assists, and Jennifer Jimenez who collected 19 digs.

Bethune-Cookman earned 59 kills on 177 attempts with 24 errors, seized 51 assists, 73 digs, nine service aces, and seven team blocks.
