Bennett leads Lady Pirates past Southern Miss
HAMPTON, Va. – Senior forward Alyssa Bennett had a career day against Southern Miss on Saturday the HU Convocation Center, as she led the Lady Pirates to a 74-58 win.
Dating back to last season, the Lady Pirates (2-0) have won 21 of their last 22 games, and they have won 16 straight games at home.
Bennett scored a career-high 25 points on 11-for-14 shooting, while also grabbing six rebounds and a team-high four steals. Senior guard Nicole Hamilton added 16 points, while sophomore guard Ryan Jordan poured in 11 points off the bench.
Redshirt-sophomore forward Brielle Ward grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds.
The Golden Eagles (2-1) shot just 35.5 percent (22-for-62) from the floor and hit just four of 19 3-pointers.

Lady Hawks cruise past Retrievers for first win
BALTIMORE, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) women's basketball team picked up their first win of the season as they cruised past the University of Maryland Baltimore-County (UMBC), 68-45. The Lady Hawks defeated UMBC for the first time on the Retriever's home-court after losing five straight dating back to 1982. With the win, UMES improved to 1-2 overall whereas UMBC fell to 1-2.
Four Lady Hawks scored in double-digits, led by junior Shawnee Sweeney. Sweeney recorded a career-high 22 points, including seven three-pointers. Sweeney also posted five boards, four assists, and two steals. Jessica Long added 11 points and a game-high six assists. Ashleigh Claybrooks registered her first double-double of the young season as she tallied 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Other notable Hawk performances included Alexis Udoji tying her career-high 12 rebounds while chipping in five points, four steals, and two blocks. Chalyse Taylor made her first start of the season and netted 11 points, including three triples in the win.
For the Retrievers, Sara Tarbert and Taylor McCarley were the only UMBC players in double-figures. Tarbert had 17 points with nine boards and three assists.
