Match 1: Howard 3, North Carolina A&T 0
BALTIMORE, Md. --- Howard knocked off North Carolina A&T in the opening round of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Championships at the Physical Education Complex on the campus of Coppin State University.
Newly minted MEAC Rookie of the Year Katherine Broussard notched a double-double with a game-high 14 kills and 12 digs and hit .379 (14-3-29) in the match. Junior Meagan Lagerlef also put away double digit kills with 11. MEAC First Team juniors Stephanie Shultis and Assata Conway also had stellar games; Shultis had seven kills and 28 of the team’s 38 assists, while Conway added six kills, six digs and 2.5 blocks (1 solo, 3 assists). MEAC Second Team junior Allyson Lods logged a team-high 15 digs.
The North 3-seed Howard (21-10) advances to the semifinals in its first tournament appearance since 2011 to take on Hampton on Saturday, November 16 at 12 noon. South 2-seed North Carolina A&T finishes their season with a 7-25 overall record.
Match 2: Hampton 3, South Carolina State 1
BALTIMORE – The regular-season northern division champion Hampton Lady Pirates advanced to the semifinal round of the MEAC volleyball championship with a 3-1 victory over South Carolina State at the Physical Education Complex, on the campus of Coppin State University in Baltimore, Md.
Vendula Strakova, the MEAC Player of the Year, led the way offensively for Hampton as she finished with 22 kills and hit .311. Sonja Maksimovic added 16 kills and hit .367. The Lady Pirates improved to 17-10 and will meet Howard in tomorrow’s semifinal game at noon.
Desire Waller paced South Carolina State with 14 kills, while Marissa Lawrence added 10 kills. Melanie Williams dished out 22 assists and seven digs. The Lady Bulldogs closed out their season with a 6-22 overall record.
The 2013 MEAC Volleyball Championship tournament continues on Friday afternoon with Florida A&M and Norfolk State at 4 p.m. Coppin State and Bethune-Cookman close out the action at 7 p.m.
Match 3: Florida A&M 3, Norfolk State 0
BALTIMORE -- Florida A&M, winners of the MEAC Southern Division, defeated Norfolk State, 3-0, in the opening round of the 2013 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Volleyball Championship Tournament Friday afternoon at the Physical Education Complex on the campus of Coppin State University.
Katherine Huanec, an All-MEAC Second Team selected, guided the Lady Rattlers to tomorrow’s semifinal match with 17 kills on 32 attacks. Diana Gonzales dished out 36 assists and Joanie Del Castillo registered 13 digs.
Goda Jankauskaite and Jessica Johnson finished with 12 and 11 kills, respectively. Darcy Moore chipped in with 35 assists. Norfolk State concluded its season with an 11-18 record.
The Lady Rattlers improved to 15-6 and will face Coppin State tomorrow at 3:30 p.m.
Match 4: Coppin State 3, Bethune-Cookman 0
BALTIMORE – Coppin State blanked Bethune-Cookman, 3-0, in the opening round of the 2013 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Volleyball Championship Tournament Friday night at the Physical Education Complex on the campus of Coppin State University.
Cindy Okpegbue paced the Lady Eagles, who advanced to the MEAC semifinals for the first time in 21 years, with 17 kills and hit. 538. Kandace Thomas added 10 kills, while Chelsee Sauni handed out 39 assists. Gabrielle Otero finished with 23 digs.
Delicia Pierre led the Lady Wildcats with 22 kills, while Alexas Thomas had 33 assists. Jennifer Jimenez chipped in with 16 digs. Bethune-Cookman concludes the season with a 6-27 record.
The Lady Eagles improved to 14-15 and will face Florida A&M in the MEAC semifinals tomorrow at 3:30 p.m.
