NORFOLK, Va., November 11, 2013 – Hampton forward Alyssa Bennett was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Player of the Week, the conference announced on Monday. Delaware State’s Raven Bankston earned Rookie of the Week honors, while Quineshia Leonard of Norfolk State earned Defensive Player of the Week accolades.
Bennett (Forward, 6-2, Sr., Hampton) registered a double-double of 22 points and 10 rebounds in the Lady Pirates season-opening win over Saint Peter’s. She also added one assist and one steal in 36 minutes.
Bankston (Guard, 5-7, Fr., Detroit, Mich.) shot 67 percent (8-of-12) from the field to finish with 18 points, and added five rebounds in a loss against Old Dominion.
Leonard (Center, 6-1, Jr., Suffolk, Va.) garnered a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds against Morehead State. She shot 46 percent (5-of-11) from the field, added one block and one steal.
Other Top Performers:
TeAmber Burke (UMES) led the Lady Hawks with 17 points and seven rebounds against USC Upstate.
Kendra Cooper (B-CU) finished with five points, one rebound, one assist and one steal in her collegiate debut.
Rae Corbo (NSU) scored 17 points and pulled down five rebounds at Morehead State.
Malia Tate-DeFreitas (Hampton) poured in 15 points and grabbed six rebounds against Saint Peter’s.
Jasmine Grice (FAMU) poured in 16 points and grabbed five rebounds against Jacksonville.
Deanna Harmon (DSU) had a team-high 11 rebounds in loss against Old Dominion.
Tierra Hawkins (DSU) finished with 18 points, five rebounds and two steals against Old Dominion.
Koyrn Lawrence (NSU) chipped in eight points, six rebounds, two assists and one steal against Morehead State.
Taneka Rubin (FAMU) registered 11 points, six rebounds and two assists against Jacksonville.
Chastity Rene Taylor (B-CU) scored her fifth career 20-plus point game with 22 points, hitting 60 percent from the floor against Florida.
