Turner and Simon lead Lady Wildcats past Lady Eagles

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Lauren Turner had 11 kills and Rhea Simon 10 as Bethune-Cookman won its second straight with a 3-0 victory (25-23,25-13,25-17) over North Carolina Central Sunday afternoon.

Simon, a sophomore,  added two services and four blocks and Turner, a freshman, had an ace and three blocks as the Lady Cats (4-16 overall, 3-1 MEAC) set the stage for a first-place showdown with Southern Division leader Florida A&M Friday. FAMU leads the division with a 4-0 record.

Delicia Pierre notched a career-high 14 digs with seven kills and three services as B-CU never trailed the first two sets and used a 5-0 run in the third set to erase a 10-9 deficit.

North Carolina Central (0-20,0-3) scored six unanswered points to close to 24-23 in the first set before a Simon kill on set point gave B-CU the lead.  The Lady Cats had eight different players score in the second set and hit .444 as a team.

Destiny Hudson had nine kills and Phylecia Armstrong six for B-CU, while Alexas Thomas had 34 assists and Jennifer Jimenez 10 digs. Jill Arlaud added two service aces.

Lady Rattlers holds off North Carolina A&T for fifth straight win

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Florida A&M Volleyball team win streak continues as they Lady Rattlers defeated North Carolina A&T. 3-0, (25-11, 25-20, 25-22) to win their fifth straight at the Al Lawson Center in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play.

FAMU (7-6, 4-0 MEAC) had three  Lady Rattlers to finish in double-digits kill as Yeisha Arcia recorded a team high 17, followed by Ginna Lopez-Chavez and Katherine Huanec with 10 kill each for the Lady Rattlers.  Diana Gonzales led the Lady Rattlers in assists with 37, while Joanie Del Castillo recorded a match high 27 digs to lead all performers.

NCAT (2-17, 1-2 MEAC) was paced by Aleena McDaniel with a team high 11 kills, followed Maris Kellar with seven.  Both Liz Martino and Chelsea Fox led the Lady Aggies in assists with Martino tallying 15 and Fox finishing with 11.

Malave Leads Eagles Past Hawks

BALTIMORE -- Nicole Malave recorded a career-high 14 kills and Coppin State ended a 14-match losing streak to Maryland Eastern Shore with a 25-13, 25-23, 25-22 victory over the Hawks on Sunday in the Physical Education Complex.

With the win, Coppin State recorded its first victory over Maryland Eastern Shore since September 27, 2005 and raised its MEAC record to 2-2 on the season.

Malave reached double figures in kills for the first time in her career with her 14-kill effort. She finished with a double-double as she also had 12 digs.

Cindy Okpegbue added 13 kills for the Eagles, while Gabrielle Otero led CSU with 17 digs and Chelsee Sauni added 38 assists.

Coppin State (5-13, 2-2 MEAC) also received nine kills and three digs from Kandace Thomas and four kills and a block from Kendra Ireigbe.

UMES (2-13, 1-2 MEAC) was led by Ashley Smith who had nine kills and Haley Robinson who had eight kills. Jingqiao Li led the Hawks with 15 digs.

Lady Bears Sweep Delaware State, Remain Unbeaten At Home

BALTIMORE, Md. -- The Morgan State volleyball team capped off the 2013 Homecoming festivities on Sunday evening with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-14, 25-22) victory over Delaware State in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) North Division match at Hill Field House.

The Lady Bears improved to 6-11 overall and 1-3 in MEAC action, while ending a three-match losing skid. Delaware State dropped to 1-12 on the season and 0-3 in the MEAC.

Morgan State had a team hitting percentage of .271 for the match with 36 kills on 85 attempts and 13 errors. The Hornets hit for a .086 with 24 kills and 17 errors.

Samantha Prescott recorded a match-high 11 kills and had six digs, as all nine Lady Bear players that played recorded at least a kill. Zuri Smith had eight kills and a match-high four blocks, while Ngebui Chafeh finished with a match-high 29 assists. Shanotta Bawek notched a team-high seven digs to go with four kills and Tamara Leslie added six digs.

Delaware State was led by Edarkis Branch, who tallied a team-high eight kills and Jasmine Jackson added seven kills and a team-high seven digs. Natalia Mendieta recorded 18 assists for the Hornets, who have dropped their last eight contests.

Hampton sweeps Howard to remain unbeaten in MEAC play

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Hampton University volleyball team remained unbeaten in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) play on Sunday afternoon, sweeping rival Howard 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-15) in Burr Gymnasium.

The Lady Pirates (10-8, 4-0 MEAC) handed Howard its first conference loss of the season.

Junior rightside Vendula Strakova, the reigning MEAC Player of the Week, led the way with 18 kills – while also hitting a team-best .615, thanks to just two errors in 26 attacks. She also had six digs and two aces.

Junior outside hitter Krista Kraskura had a team-high seven digs to go along with eight kills, going error-free for the first time this season to hit .533. Senior setter Bibiany Fonseca had 30 of Hampton’s 32 assists.

Senior libero Sheileen Pagan added six digs on defense.

Katherine Broussard led Howard with nine kills.
