NCCU's Brooks finishes third at Great American Cross Country Festival
CARY, N.C. - Junior cross country runner Amber Brooks earned a third place finish as the North Carolina Central University men and women's cross country teams competed in the HBCU Challenge of the Great American Cross Country Festival on Oct. 5 in Cary, N.C.
In addition to NCCU, the HBCU Challenge hosted four other cross country programs: Hampton, Howard, South Carolina State, and North Carolina A&T.
Brooks completed the 5k course race, stopping the clock at 19 minutes and 12 seconds.
Also competing for the Lady Eagles were runners Syrita Hunt (21:41, 15th), Delesha Conquest (22:24, 19th), Regina Summerville (22:32, 21st), Christa Landy (25:38, 27th), and Sararesa Hudson (28:14, 29th).
As a team, the Lady Eagles finished in third place behind Hampton and Howard, respectively.
On the men's side, freshman Gregory Coward finished the 8k course with the time of 27 minutes and 46 seconds for a tenth place finish.
Deandre James (28:55, 16th), Victor Dunbar (31:26, 26th), Kevin Vincent (32:17, 29th), Orane Morais (32:20, 30th), Carlton Edwards (33:14, 31st), and Brett Boykin-Roach (36:25, 34th) competed for the Eagles as well.
The Eagles finished in fourth place after North Carolina A&T, Howard, and Hampton.

Seymour, Lady Bears Win Delaware State Invitational #2
SMYRNA, Del. -- The Morgan State women's cross country team kicked off its homecoming weekend with a victory at the Delaware State Invitational #2 5k race. The Lady Bears finished with a score of 15 points.
Led by Ashley Seymour, Morgan State had runners place in each of the top five spots and six of the top eight, to win Friday's event. Seymour would finish with a winning time of 18:21.64 to claim the individual title.
Nyneeya Columbus (2nd-19:12.28), Kali Kendall (3rd-19:40.38), Jada Boyd (4th-19:42.14) and Danielle Calhoun (5th-19:46.37) all finished in the top five for the Lady Bears. Tere Cooley finished eighth with a time of 20:49.25.
Maryland Eastern Shore (59 points) held off host Delaware State (61 points) for second, while Coppin State finished fourth with 102 points.

Smooth Leads Morgan State cross country to second place at Delaware State Invitational
DOVER, Del. – Led once again by senior Christian Smooth, the Morgan State men took second place at the Delaware State Invitational.
Smooth distanced himself from the rest of the pack and finished the 5-mile run in a winning time of 27:40.96. The senior’s teammates Lenier Tucker and Johnson Onyx were not too far behind as they crossed the finish line in third (28:28.87) and eighth place (30:24.43), respectively.
The race marked the third time this season that Smooth has recorded a first-place finish.
In the men’s team scoring, Morgan State scored 46 points to finish behind Maryland-Eastern Shore who posted a first place finish with 39 points. Host Delaware State finished the day in third place (53 points) followed by Coppin State (77 points).

Spartans finish fourth at George Mason Invitational
LEESBURG, Va. – The Norfolk State men’s cross country team finished fourth at the George Mason Invitational on Saturday.
NSU finished with 84 points behind George Mason (20), UNC-Wilmington (57) and American (73).
Freshman Sammy Kiptoo paced the Spartans in the 8K race, finishing in sixth place with a time of 27:57.70. Senior Damtew Adnew was the next best finisher for NSU as he ran a time of 29:02.80 to place 16th.
Rounding out the top 30 finishes for the Spartans were senior Kipchirchir Kiptoo (30:50.20), redshirt freshmen Marquis Worsley (31:37.70) and William Brown Jr. (31:46.10), and sophomores Jerome Scurry Jr. (32:34.40) and Joshua Carino (32:51.50).

Masai Leads NSU Women to 3rd Place at George Mason Invitational
LEESBURG, Va. – Junior Fiona Masai finished second overall to help the Norfolk State women’s cross country team place third at the George Mason Invitational on Saturday morning.
NSU finished with 60 points. George Mason claimed the team title with 20 points followed by UNC-Wilmington, who finished with 50 points. The District of Columbia tallied 108 points to finish fourth.
Masai finished the 6K race with a time of 24:18.60. Sophomore Faith Summey also finished in the top ten, placing ninth overall with a time of 25:11.20.
Sophomores Rachel Webb (26:02.30), Purity Mitei (26:27.90) and Ra’Shaun Combs (30:19.90) finished 18th, 21st and 27th. Junior Kassandra Irizarry (30:38.40) closed things out for the Spartans, placing 28th overall.

Lady Pirates win HBCU Challenge for fourth straight year
CARY, N.C. – For the fourth straight year, the Hampton University women’s cross country team won the Robert Shumake HBCU Challenge, which was held Saturday morning at the WakeMed Soccer Park. The men’s cross country team finished third.
The Lady Pirates tallied 28 points, dominating the race. All seven Hampton runners finished in the top 15 – including individual champion Nichelle Harris and second-place finisher Devyn Thompson.
Harris ran an 18:38.10 over the 5K course, and Thompson ran a 19:07.30.
Ce’aira Brown ran a 20:00.20 to finish seventh, while Cydney Robinson came in eighth after running a 20:04.90 and Ashley Armand came in 10th with a time of 20:39.90.
Amanda Delacruz ran a 21:04.60 to come in 12th, and Kaylor Murray ran a 21:14.30 to finish 14th.
The Pirates finished with 91 points in the men’s 8K race, with North Carolina A&T taking the team title with 20 points. Rayon Black was the lone Pirate to finish in the top 15, coming in 14th after completing the 8K course in 28:42.00.
Warren Hill ran a 28:58.50 to come in 17th, while Edose Ibadin ran a 29:00.80 to finish 19th and Je’Von Hutchison was 20th after turning in a 29:25.50.
Mohamed Labor-Koroma ran a 29:27.10 to finish 21st.
Andrae Green ran a 31:36.80 to finish 27th.
Howard’s Elisha Metto won the men’s individual title with a 25:53.20.

UMES places four in top-10 for men, women place all five scoring runners in top-25
DOVER, Del. - For the second time in the past month, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore men's cross country team won a race hosted by Delaware State University as the Hawks blazed past the competition to win the Farm Run Invitational on Friday. The women's team placed second amongst four teams as well.
The Hawks had four men place within the top-10 in the five mile race. The team finished with 39 points altogether, seven points better than the second-place school. All four teams in the race were Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference schools.
Freshman Khalil Rmidi led the charge with a second-place finish in 28:10.86, while freshman Derrick Cheruiyot ran a 28:47.52 to take fifth. Freshman Nassor Whitehead took home a sixth-place finish in 29:11.93, while senior Codjo Gbedo was ninth with a time of 30:43.83.
The top-5 for the Hawks was rounded out by senior Alonzo Jarmon, who concluded the race in 32:45.58, good for a finish of 17th place. UMES also had two other runners compete in junior Javierelle Turner and senior Aaron Chatman, who finished in 21st and 22nd, respectively.
The women claimed 59 points in the 5k race, two better than the third-place finisher.
Much like Rmidi for the men, freshman Rachel Halmon has been the benchmark for the women's team. She took sixth overall in the race with a time of 19:53.25, 30 seconds faster than UMES' closest competitor.
Sophomore Shantol Hemley was seventh in 20:22.33, while junior Margaret Wilmot-Francis took 10th in 21:14.53. Sophomore Annis Mars was 16th in 22:36.58. The Lady Hawks finished their scoring when senior Latasha Moore took 23rd in 25:14.93.
Morgan State won the women's race with 15 points, while also taking second in the men's portion. The Bears' Ashley Seymour won the women's race in 18:21.64, while Christian Smooth took home top honors in the men's with 27:40.96.
