Pierre’s 16 kills leads Bethune-Cookman past North Carolina A&T

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Delicia Pierre’s 16 kills led three Bethune-Cookman players in double figures kills as the Lady Cats downed North Carolina A&T 3-0 (28-26,30-28,25-17) in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Southern Division match Friday evening in Historic Moore Gym.

Destiny Hudson had a career-high 14 kills, and Rhea Simon added 12 as the Lady Cats (3-16 overall, 2-1 MEAC) hit a season-high .315 and outlasted the Aggies (2-16,1-1) in two extended sets.

B-CU had three set points in the opener, finally winning it on a Pierre kill and a Jennifer Jimenez ace.

Hudson had eight kills in the second set as B-CU finally won after the Aggies extended the set four times. A Hudson kill and a Lauren Turner ace helped the Lady Cats pull away from a 28-28 tie.

Pierre had six third-set kills and B-CU hit .542 as it pulled away from a 13-12 lead.

Freshman setter Alexas Thomas finished with 48 assists, setting the B-CU record for most assists in a three-set match. Jimenez and Normarie Rolon paced the defense with 16 and 11 digs, respectively.

Hampton bounces back, defeats Coppin State

HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University volleyball team got back into the win column Friday evening in Holland Hall, sweeping conference foe Coppin State in straight sets 3-0 (25-13, 25-19, 25-16).

The Lady Pirates (9-8, 3-0 MEAC) have won four of their last five matches.

Junior rightside Vendula Strakova, the reigning MEAC Player of the Week, led the Lady Pirates with 16 kills, and she added 11 digs for her 11th double-double of the season. Junior outside hitter Krista Kraskura added eight kills and a team-high 13 digs.

Sophomore outside hitter Allysa Medina had six kills and just one error, hitting .455. Senior setter Bibiany Fonseca recorded 39 of Hampton’s 43 assists, was a perfect 5-for-5 in attempts, hitting 1.000.

Senior libero Sheileen Pagan had 10 digs.

Nicole Malave led the lady Eagles with six kills. Kendra Ireigbe, Ariel Richard and Kandace Thomas each added five kills for Coppin State. Gabrielle Otero led CSU with 10 digs, while setter Chelsee Sauni had 21 assists.

Lady Rattlers extend win streak with win over North Carolina Central

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Florida A&M Volleyball team extends their win streak to four as the Lady Rattlers defeated North Carolina Central, 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-8), at the Al Lawson Center in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference action.

FAMU (6-6, 3-0 MEAC) had pair of Lady Rattlers to finish in double-digit kills as both Ginna Lopez-Chavez and Yeisha Arcia finished with 10 kills each, while both Katherine Huanec and Dei`Ja Martin recorded nine kills each for the Lady Rattlers.  Diana Gonzales led the team in assists with 28, while Joanie Del Castillo led FAMU in digs with 15, followed by Arcia with 11.

NCCU (0-19, 0-2 MEAC) was led by Da`Sha Brown with seven, followed by Kelsey Murphy with five.   Alice Genna led the Lady Eagles in assists and digs with 11 in each category.

South Carolina State knocks off Savannah State

ORANGEBURG, S.C. — The South Carolina State women's volleyball team defeated Savannah State, 3-0 (25-22, 25-18, 25-17), in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) match on Friday.  With the victory, the Lady Bulldogs improved to 2-15 overall and 2-1 in the MEAC while Savannah State remained winless at 0-19 overall and 0-3 in the MEAC.

South Carolina State was led by senior Desire Waller, who recorded nine kills, seven digs and four block assists.  Sophomore Melanie Williams ran a well balanced offense as she put up a match-high 22 set assists. 

Senior Alyse Lewis contributed five kills with two solo blocks and one block assist while sophomore Shandice Sluch and senior Taylor Bailey contributed four kills each in the match.  Bailey also had a game-high five solo blocks for the Lady Bulldogs in the victory.  As a team, SC State had a very solid defensive outing holding Savannah State to a .077 hitting percentage for the match.

Savannah State was led by Justice Dilworth and Christian Lyle with seven kills each.  Bryana Gadis had eight digs while Alexis Washington picked up seven digs in the loss.

Howard ends the nation's longest home-match winning streak

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) volleyball team fell to Howard University, 3-1.

The Lady Bison ended the nation's longest home-match winning streak (31). In the process, Howard also snapped the Lady Hawks' 35 regular-season home-match winning streak against conference opponents.

Sophomore Ashley Smith led the Lady Hawks with 20 kills. Smith is the first Hawk to post 20+ kills in a single-match this season. Freshman Sonia Rosales set a new career-high in assists (44), breaking her previous mark (38).

This is Rosales second 30+ assist performance this season. Rosales is the last freshman to tally multiple 30+ assist outings in a single-season since Jessica Vicic (2011). Senior Jingqiao Li posted her fourth 20+ dig performance this season (21), tying for the most 20+ dig performances in a single-season with Rebecca Prado since 2008.

For the Lady Bison (13-5 overall, 2-0 MEAC), three players ended with 11 kills each. Stephanie Shultis led the team with 41 assists while Allyson Lods had 14 digs in the match.
