MEAC Announces Volleyball Weekly Honors

NORFOLK, Va., October 28, 2013 – Coppin State junior Ariel Richard was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Volleyball Player of the Week. Howard freshman Katherine Broussard earned Rookie of the Week honors, the conference announced on Monday.

Richard (OH, 5-11, Jr., Torrance, Calif.) finished with 18 kills as the Eagles defeated Hampton (3-2). She also registered 12 kills and 11 digs in a come-from-behind victory over Norfolk State. Richard averaged 3.0 kills, 1.10 digs and 0.80 blocks in the two wins.

Broussard (OH, 5-7, Fr., Harvey, La.) totaled 37 kills and had a .366 hitting percentage to help the Lady Bison to wins over Bethune-Cookman, Maryland Eastern Shore and Delaware State. She registered 17 kills, nine digs, and three assists against DSU.

Other Top Performers: 

Te’Borah Hawkins-Hollingsworth (NCAT) finished with a single-match record .833 hitting percentage and had 10 kills against North Carolina Central.

Katherine Huanec (FAMU) recorded a season-high 20 kills in a road victory over North Florida.

Goda Jankauskaite (NSU) totaled 43 kills, including 22, in a five-set win over Morgan State.

Jingqiao Li (UMES) recorded 15 digs and six assists against Howard.

Precious Manu (UMES) registered nine assists and five digs against Howard.

Haley McClure (MSU) averaged 7.5 kills, four digs and 1.5 blocks to help the Lady Bears to a 1-1 week.

Rhea Simon (B-CU) tallied 23 kills, 11 digs and six aces in matches against Delaware State, Savannah State and South Carolina State.

Zuri Smith (MSU) totaled 24 kills, eight blocks and three digs, in matches against Norfolk State and Hampton.

Vendula Strakova (Hampton) finished with a career-high 33 kills in a five-set loss to Coppin State.

Alexas Thomas (B-CU) recorded 74 assists (8.2 avg./set) and 17 digs against Delaware State, Savannah State and South Carolina State.
