PRINCESS ANNE, Md. — College students might not always act their age and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore student-athletes definitely reverted to a younger age while volunteering at Pemberton Elementary School on Wednesday, Oct. 9.
“This was a lot of fun,” said Skylar Murray, a freshman baseball student-athlete.
In total, nine UMES student-athletes from baseball, women’s basketball and track and field participated.
TeAmber Burke, a child development major and guard from women’s basketball said, “It was a lot of fun to help the young kids. This gave us a chance to be active and teach the kids about the sports we love.”
The UMES Student-Athlete Advisory Committee takes part in planning and coordinating many of the community outreach events that student-athletes are involved with throughout the year.
The student-athletes played basketball, tag and attempted to bounce on a hippity-hop ball. And if you have not seen student-athletes on kid-sized scooters, it is hilarious. Dillon Simon (track and field) and Chalyse Taylor (women’s basketball), were each challenged to a hula hoop contest by the pre-kindergarten and kindergarten kids that were in attendance.
Simon was undeniably more competitive than the five-year old he was in the contest against, but both had fun and shared some laughs. UMES visited with Pemberton Elementary School students from 5:30 p.m-6:30 p.m., and entertained kids and parents alike.
