Hornets shine in season-opening bowling tournament
KUTZTOWN, Pa. --- The Delaware State University bowling team opened the 2013-14 season with an impressive showing at the Kutztown University Fall Baker Invite and Fall Team Invite last weekend.
The Hornets finished third in both and the Baker and Team formats, posting an overall record of 9-2 in the tournament.
DSU was 5-1 in the Baker competition, posting wins over Adelphi (759-721), St. Francis-N.Y. (782-741), Cheyney (727-437), Long Island (755-701) and St. Francis-Pa. (773-720). Host Kutztown handed the Hornets their lone Baker defeat of the tournament (702-832).
In the regular team competition, Delaware State’s Briana Bush earned Most Valuable Performer and All-tournament Team honors after topping all competitors with a five-game average of 210.4 (1052 total pinfall). Bush rolled a career-high 278 in the very first match. She posted a score of 225 in the fourth match and 202 in the second game.
Stephanie Sheridan was second on the Hornets with a five-game average of 183.8, topped by a score of 226 in her fourth game.
Ryanne Tyler had DSU’s second-best score of the tournament, rolling a 230 in the fourth game.
The Hornets posted a 4-1 record in the regular team competition.

NSU Finishes 4-2 at Kutztown Baker Invitational
NORFOLK, Va. – The No. 15 Norfolk State bowling team opened its season on Saturday by finishing 4-2 at the Kutztown Fall Baker Invitational.
NSU suffered a pair of losses to No. 10 St. Francis (Pa.) (832-659) and No. 12 Kutztown (795-693), but the Spartans did manage to come away with three wins against ranked teams. After opening their season with the setback against St. Francis, the Spartans defeated Cheney 703-470 and No. 17 St. Francis Brooklyn, 796-760.
A victory over No. 16 LIU Brooklyn, 785-684, was followed by the loss to host Kutztown. NSU capped off its tournament play with an upset of No. 11 Adelphi, 714-687.
Senior Thea Aspiras earned a spot on the all-tournament team thanks to a Baker frame average of 19.7. She was one of six players to earn some sort of all-tournament nod along with Deanna DiRado of Kutztown, Brittney Hart of LIU Brooklyn and the trio of Ashley Howe, Sarah Ross and Christina Leid of St. Francis (Pa.).
NSU was one of three teams to go 4-2 on Saturday, with three teams finishing either 5-1 or 6-0. A total of 12 teams competed at the invitational on the first day. The Spartans did not compete in Sunday’s team competition.

Lady Rattlers pick up a pair of wins in 2013 All State Sugar Bowl Collegiate
NEW ORLEANS -- The Florida A&M Bowling Team pick up a pair of wins this past weekend as they participated in the 2013 All-State Sugar Bowl Collegiate this past weekend, hosted by Tulane University.
On the first day of competition in baker play, FAMU faced Prairie View A&M in their first match as they Lady Rattlers pulled out a 727-703 win over the Lady Panthers.
They Lady Rattlers would drop their next four baker matches as Alabama State defeated the Lady Rattlers, 672-615 in their second match; Texas Southern defeated FAMU, 751-720 in the third match.
The Lady Rattlers dropped a 681-675 heartbreaker to Sam Houston State in the fourth match and suffered a 761-738 defeat to Alabama A&M in their final baker match of the day.
In head-to-head competition, the Lady Rattlers defeated Tulane University, 765-726 in their third match of head-to-head competition. FAMU dropped a 1,077-970 decision to Stephen F. Austin in their first match, fell to arch-rival Bethune-Cookman in the third match, 869-792 and dropped an 829-818 heartbreaker to Jackson State in their final match of head-to-head competition.
On the final day of competition, the Lady Rattlers dropped 4-1 decision to Jackson State in the best of seven baker’s play. In the first match, FAMU grabbed the 1-0 lead in the match as they defeated JSU, 164-157 in the first game. The Lady Tigers would tie the match at 1-1 as they edged the Lady Rattlers 182-178 in the second baker game.
JSU would take a 2-1 lead in the competition as they defeated FAMU 211-176. The Lady Tigers would win the match as they edged the Lady Rattlers 168-167 in the four game and 189-180 in the fifth game.
FAMU was led by Carrie Hopkinson as she tallied a 949 total pinfall and recorded a match high as she bowled a 244 against Stephen F. Austin in the first game.
Behind her was Katherine Jones as she recorded 911 total pinfall and bowled a game high 204 in the Lady Rattlers win over Tulane in their fourth game of head-to-head competition.
Victoria Jones recorded the third highest pin fall with a 670 total, followed by a Lauren Julun with 670, Carrie Jefferies with 637 and Breanna Bisbee as she recorded a 252 total pinfall in the two games that she bowled in.
