Hampton remains unbeaten with win over rival Norfolk State
 
HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University volleyball team put on a dominating performance Sunday afternoon in Holland Hall, sweeping rival Norfolk State 3-0 (25-19, 25-15, 25-11) to remain unbeaten in conference play.
 
The Lady Pirates (13-8, 7-0 MEAC) have won five straight matches.
 
Junior outside hitter Krista Kraskura led Hampton with 13 kills, while junior rightside Vendula Strakova added 11 kills. Kraskura hit .565 for the match, and Strakova hit .526.
 
Senior setter Bibiany Fonseca had 30 assists, while senior libero Sheileen Pagan had a team-high 12 digs on defense.
 
 The Lady Pirates hit .403 (34 kills, five errors in 72 attacks) for the match, while holding Norfolk State to just .043 (27 kills, 23 errors in 94 attacks). Hampton has held five opponents under .100 hitting this season, including four of its last five.
 
Hampton held a 10-6 edge in aces and a 7.0-2.0 advantage in blocks.
 
Goda Jankauskaite and Jessica Johnson each had a team-high seven digs for the Spartans.

Savannah State falls to Alabama State in non-conference match

SAVANNAH, Ga. – In the second to last nonconference game of the 2013 season, the Savannah State volleyball team fell to Alabama State in straight sets on Sunday in Willcox-Wiley Gym.
Senior Bryana Gadis and sophomore Justice Dilworth led the Lady Tigers with six kills each. Dilworth and Alexis Washington led in digs with six each. SSU falls to 0-24 on the season.

Alabama State (14-12) was led by Rachel Smith who had eight kills and no errors on 12 attacks for a .667 hitting percentage. The team had a combined .391 hitting percentage. Brooke Beasley led in digs with nine.

Hawks rally past Hornets for five-set victory

DOVER, Del. --- The Delaware State volleyball team led two-games-to-one and held a 20-16 lead in game four, but faltered down the stretch in a 3-2 loss to Maryland-Eastern Shore in a MEAC North match in Memorial Hall this afternoon.


The Hawks rallied to win game four 25-21, then took the decisive fifth game 16-14 to claim the victory. Delaware State was a point away from winning the contest, leading 14-13 in game five; but UMES scored the last three points to take the set and match.

The Hawks took the opening game 25-23, but the Hornets won the next two games 25-19 and 25-16, respectively, to open up a 2-1 lead in the match.

Delaware State has lost its last two matches by 3-2 scores and is 0-3 in five-set contests this season.

Diara Lewis and Ashley Smith led UMES with 13 kills each. Jingqiao Li had a team-high 17 digs for the Hawks, while teammate Sonia Rosales led all players with 39 assists.

Delaware State’s Jessica Croucher had a match-high 19 kills. She also added 12 digs. Edarkis Branch added 16 kills and Jasmine Jackson had 14 for the Hornets. DSU’s Sonya Inderbitzen topped all players with 18 digs.

The Hornets return to action with a home match against Bethune-Cookman on Monday (Oct. 21). The 7:00 p.m. contest is also DSU’s annual “Dig Pink” match. Fans are asked to wear pink and bring a donation to help raise funds and awareness in the fight against breast cancer.
