KENNER, La. – Competing in the first tournament of the 2013-14 campaign, the No. 20 Bethune-Cookman bowling team finished the first day at the AllState Sugar Bowl Collegiate Invitational with a record of 3-2 on Friday at the AMF All Star Lanes. The event runs Friday through Sunday, and is hosted by Tulane University.
Bethune-Cookman opened the day with a 757-684 defeat of Alabama State, followed by an 891-675 setback against Texas Southern.
The Cats quickly bounced back to take down No. 19 Prairie View A&M, 761-743, following that win with an 828-751 takedown of Alabama A&M. B-CU finished the day with a tough 661-600 loss against Jackson State.
As a team, the Lady Wildcats sit in sixth place after the opening day’s baker format, just 63 pins behind Alabama State. Stephen F. Austin finished the day with a 4-1 record and sits in first place, followed by Texas Southern, Sam Houston and Alabama A&M.
The tournament continues Saturday at 10:30 a.m. CT with five team games.
In the five-person team game, starting members of the competing teams will successively and, in regular order, bowl one frame on one lane. Once completed, the team members shall move to the alternate lane of the competition pair. This pattern of play continues until all 10 frames of a game are complete. The same substitution rules as Baker will apply.
The tournament concludes Sunday with a tournament at 8:30 a.m. CT. The tournament, consisting of Best 4-of-7 Baker matches, will determine the champion. The 11 teams will be seeded based on the performance on Friday and Saturday.
The three-day AllState Sugar Bowl Collegiate Invitational features 11 schools, including four nationally ranked programs. Sam Houston State, last year's tournament winner, returns to defend their title and is ranked sixth in the in the preseason National Tenpin Coaches Association (NTCA) poll, while Stephen F. Austin, Prairie View A&M and Bethune-Cookman also open the season ranked, ninth, 19th and 20th respectively.
In addition to those four schools, the field includes Louisiana Tech, Florida A&M, Alabama State, Texas Southern, Jackson State and the Green Wave.
