Volleyball Recap: October 13

Spartans Sweep Sunday Matinee over Delaware State, 3-0

NORFOLK, Va. – Coming off a disappointing loss on Friday at Howard, the Norfolk State volleyball team rebounded with a 3-0 victory over Delaware State in a Sunday matinee at Joseph Echols Hall.

The senior duo of Goda Jankauskaite and Coralie Jarema led the Spartans for the second match in a row, allowing NSU to keep pace in the MEAC Northern Division standings. Jankauskaite had 16 kills with four blocks, while Jarema added 15 kills and hit .440.

Norfolk State won, 25-22, 25-22 and 25-18 to improve to 3-2 in the MEAC and 7-13 overall.

Janay Frazier finished the match with nine kills on a .375 attack percentage. NSU hit .257 for the match. Redshirt junior Noelle Eagles added 14 digs, while sophomore Darcy Moore tallied 39 assists in just those three sets with 10 digs.

Branch led DSU with 15 kills. Jessica Russell-Croucher had six kills and eight digs, while Jae Jackson led all players with six blocks.

North Carolina Central earns second straight win with 3-1 victory over SCSU

DURHAM, N.C. – During a back-and-forth match filled with 28 ties and nine lead changes the North Carolina Central University volleyball team captured its second-straight victory defeating the South Carolina State University Bulldogs, 3-1 (25-21, 28-26, 19-25, 25-22) in a Sunday afternoon Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference battle inside the L.T. Walker Complex on the campus of NCCU.

Junior Da’sha Brown earned her third kill/dig double-double of the season leading the Eagles with 12 kills and 12 digs.

Senior Kalin Russell and junior Ashley McCarthy also added double-digit kill performances during the victory contributing 10 apiece. Russell gathered an additional seven digs, one service ace and a season-high eight blocks, with two solo rejections while McCarthy contributed five digs and three blocks.

The Eagles offense was assisted by the junior/sophomore setting duo of Alice Genna and Melissa Rabell Pineiro who dished 24 and 14 assists respectively.

On the defensively end, rookie Kelsey Murphy led the way with a team-high 14 digs, while also contributing seven kills.

SCSU was led by Desire Waller who led the match with 23 kills, Melanie Williams who circulated a match-high 43 assists and Victoria Ferguson who led the match with 15 digs.

Lady Aggies top Savannah State for second straight win

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The North Carolina A&T volleyball team recorded a season-high .263 attack percentage in a 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-18) victory over Savannah State in a MEAC match, Sunday afternoon at Moore Gymnasium.

The Aggies (4-18 overall) improved to 3-2 in the MEAC. A&T posted a 3-7 conference record in 2012. The last time the Aggies recorded more than three conference wins was in 2007 when they went 5-3 in the MEAC. Savannah State (0-22) fell to 0-5 in the MEAC.

Brooke Stamnes finished with eight kills and Aleena McDaniel added seven. Stamnes and McDaniel recorded 12 and 10 digs respectively and both finished with a pair of service aces. Te'Borah Hawkins-Hollingsworth tallied six kills and had a match-high .455 attack percentage. As a team, the Aggies committed just nine attacking errors.

Freshman Liz Martino finished with 20 assists and Ashley Johnson tossed in 10 digs.

Lady Pirates stay hot, knock off Maryland Eastern Shore

HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University volleyball team showed its resiliency on Sunday afternoon, mounting multiple comebacks en route to a 3-0 (25-18, 26-24, 25-21)sweep of Maryland Eastern Shore in Holland Hall.

Hampton (11-8, 5-0 MEAC) has won three straight matches and six of its last seven. In five conference matches so far this season, the Lady Pirates have only lost one set.

It was Hampton’s first sweep of UMES since 2005.

Junior rightside Vendula Strakova, the reigning MEAC Player of the Week, had a team-high 19 kills, while junior outside hitter Krista Kraskura added 14 kills and hit a team-best .480, thanks to just two errors in 25 attacks.

Sophomore outside hitter Allysa Medina added seven kills and hit .375, and she tied junior middle blocker Marija Kocevska for the team lead with three aces.

Senior setter Bibiany Fonseca had 40 of Hampton’s 42 assists, and senior libero Sheileen Pagan had a team-high 12 digs.

The Lady Pirates hit a match-best .423 in the first set, recording 16 kills and just five errors in 26 total attacks. UMES actually held an 8-7 lead early in that set, but the Lady Pirates took control by scoring the next six points – taking a 13-8 lead on a kill from Kocevska.

Moriah Brookins, Ashley Smith, and Diara Lewis each had a team-high five kills for the Lady Hawks.
