Three Double-Figure Outings Lead Howard To A 67-54 Victory Over Coppin State

BALTIMORE-
With a double-double from senior Saadia Doyle, double-figure performances from senior Kara Smith and freshman Victoria Gonzalez and a season-high 14 assists from senior Cheyenne Curley-Payne, Howard defeated the Lady Eagles of Coppin State 67-54 on Monday, Jan. 7 in Baltimore, Md., at the Physical Education Complex.

In their second MEAC win of the season, MEAC Player of the Week Doyle notched 26 points and 15 rebounds on a perfect 6-of-6 from the charity stripe, a perfect 2-of-2 from behind arc and a 9-of-17 outing from the field.  Smith, who was also an exceptional 2-of-2 from the free-throw line, finished with 18 points, as Gonzalez finished with 11 points on a 5-of-6 performance from the field.

The mighty blue and white notched a season-high 92 percent from the charity stripe (12-13), while going 50 percent three-point range (7-14) and 45 percent from the field (24-53).

Howard advances to 7-6 on the season, 2-0 in the MEAC and 2-5 on the road.

Coppin State senior Leola Spotwood scored a team-high 19 points. Spotwood finished the game 8-of-18 from the floor and also added six steals and four rebounds.

Shawntae Payne added 11 points, including shooting 3-of-3 from the three-point line, for Coppin State (4-11, 0-2 MEAC).

Lady Tigers Down Trinity Baptist

SAVANNAH, Ga. - In their final non-conference game of the 2012-13 campaign Savannah State squad downed visitors Trinity Baptist College 66-41, Monday evening in Tiger Arena.

The Lady Tigers open a 14-game MEAC stretch this Saturday with a visit to Baltimore, Maryland in matchup with Coppin State. 

Leading SSU was senior Erin Hogue, who returned to action after missing the previous game with a concussion. Hogue recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 12 points and 12 rebounds. She leads the team in rebounds with 113 and is third in scoring with 145 points (10.4 avg).

The Lady Tigers Andrietta Thomas was close to a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds. Jasmine Norman and true freshman Jerryshia Williams added eight points apiece.

Nicole Collins led all scorers with 32 points and 14 rebounds, hitting 10-of-25 attempts from the field, and 10-of-13 attempts from the charity strip.

Trinity Baptist was unable to get SSU's lead under double-digits for the remaining 10 minutes as the Lady Tigers continued to etch out a victory. With only seconds to play, Hogue sank a layup for SSU's largest lead of the night, 66-39. Kaneesha Ellick scored the final points of the game with two seconds showing, setting the final score.

The Lady Tigers shot 44.6 percent from the floor, and 50 percent from the free-throw line. SSU outrebounded the Eagles 51-41. Trinity Baptist ended the game shooting at a 22 percent clip from the floor.

FAMU Gets First MEAC Win Of The Season With 76-60 Win Over Bethune-Cookman

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -Florida A&M picked up their first MEAC win of the season as the Lady Rattlers defeated arch rival Bethune-Cookman, 76-60 Monday night at the Al Lawson Center.

FAMU (4-10, 1-0 MEAC) had a pair of Lady Rattlers to score 20-plus points as Jasmine Grice scored a game high 22 points, followed by Kimberly Sparkman with 21.  Also both Andreya Lacy and Patrice Collie finished in double-digit scoring for FAMU as Lacy scored a career high 13 points and Collie added 10.  Collie also led the Lady Rattlers on the boards with eight and both Lacy and Collie finished with three assists each.

B-CU (5-8, 0-1 MEAC) had a pair of Lady Wildcats to score in double-digits as Chasity Rene' Taylor finished with a team high 18 points, while Amanda Hairston recorded a double-double as she scored 12 points and pulled down 13 rebounds. 

FAMU finished the game shooting 47.3 percent (26-of-55), while B-CU shot 41.8 percent (23-of-55) from the field.  The Lady Wildcats controlled the boards in the contest by a 47-23 margin.
