Lady Hornets Win Overtime Thriller At Houston Baptist

HOUSTON, Texas- Tierra Hawkins hit a lay-up off a steal as time expired in overtime to give Delaware State a stunning 84-83 win over Houston Baptist at Sharp Gym.

The Lady Hornets trailed 83-82 after a jumper by Chelsea Dukes in the final seconds of overtime. On the ensuing possession by Houston Baptist, Hawkins stole the ball then beat the clock with a lay-up for the winning points.

Hawkins had a career-high 29 points in the contest. She was 13-for-19 from the field and 3-of-3 at the free throw line. She also led the Lady Hornets with 11 rebounds to record her third double-double of the season and 10th of her collegiate career.

Hawkins has reached double figures in scoring in five straight games and 11 times in DSU's 13 contests this season. The 29-point performance was her fifth game with 20-or-more points this year. She has ten 20-point scoring games at DSU.

Tasia Bristow had 18 points and a team-high seven assists, while Keyanna Tate added 12 points (5-8 FGs) and Dukes 10 for the Lady Hornets.

Tayler Jefferson was high scorer for Houston Baptist with 29 points.

The score was 70-70 at the end of regulation. Bristow hit a basket and free throw with 22 seconds left in regulation to tie the game.

Delaware State scored first in overtime on two free throws by Tate with 4:30 left to play. Deanna Harmon hit one of two free throws with 3:39 left to give the Lady Hornets a 730-70 lead.

DSU appeared to take control when Bristow hit a three-pointer to give the Lady Hornets a 78-73 lead with 2:26 left in the extra period.

Houston Baptist answered with a 6-0 run, and pulled ahead 79-78 on two free throws by Shanice Steenholdt with 1:36 to go in overtime.

The teams traded baskets before Houston's Erin McGarrachan hit a three-point shot to give the Huskies an 83-80 lead with 10 seconds left to play.

After a time out, Dukes nailed a jumper to pull the Lady Hornets to within 83-82, and set up the last second heroics by Hawkins.
