Delaware State Drops Bethune-Cookman,68-52

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - After shooting 11 percent in the first half, Bethune-Cookman dropped a 68-52 MEAC decision to Delaware State Saturday in historic Moore Gymnasium.

The Hornets, who got a career-high 24 from Marques Oliver, took a 33-17 halftime lead and never saw the lead get under double digits in the second half.

Bethune-Cookman (7-14 overall, 2-4 MEAC) got as close as 44-33 on an Adrien Coleman lay-up with 13:54 remaining, but the Hornets (8-10,3-1) rebuilt the lead to 59-38 on a Tyshawn Bell three-point play with 6:27 remaining. Delaware State's biggest lead was 64-41 on a Jabari Joyner three-pointer with 4:18 left.

The Wildcats' only lead was at 3-1 on a Marc Mack jumper with 16:36 left. Delaware State held the Wildcats scoreless for three minutes to turn a 13-10 advantage into a 26-10 lead.

Coleman and Paul Scotland each scored 13 points to lead B-CU, while Ricky Johnson had a season-high 11.

Willis Leads Four NCCU Players In Win Over Coppin State

URHAM, N.C. - Junior Andre Armstrong scored a career-high 28 points, but Ray Willis led four players in double figures with 20 points and North Carolina Central shot 55.2 percent from the floor on its way to an 84-75 MEAC victory over Coppin State on Saturday at McDougald-McLendon Gym.

North Carolina Central improved to 5-0 in the MEAC and 12-7 overall on the strength of making 32-of-58 shots from the floor, including shooting 58.6 percent from the field in the second half.

Willis made 7-of-13 shots from the field to lead North Carolina Central. Jeremy Ingram had 19 points, Ray Copeland scored 17 points and Stanton Kidd added 15 points for North Carolina Central.

Coppin State (5-16, 2-4 MEAC) was led by Armstrong who made 9-of-15 shots from the floor, including 6-of-10 three-point attempts. Patrick Cole added 17 points and six rebounds and Taariq Cephas scored 13 points and six assists for the Eagles.

Pirates Fall To Norfolk State In Battle Of The Bay

NORFOLK, Va. -Hampton couldn't overcome a second-half rally by Norfolk State on Saturday, as the Spartans beat the Pirates 74-67.

The Pirates dropped their third straight game.

Freshman guard Deron Powers led the Pirates with 20 points, while sophomore center Emmanuel Okoroba added 13 points and junior guard/forward Du'Vaughn Maxwell recorded his fourth double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Hampton shot 46.4 percent (13-for-28) in the first half, and Powers led the way with seven points before the break.

The Pirates shot 43.1 percent (25-for-58) from the floor, but hit just four of their 20 3-pointers (20.0 percent) and 13 of their 21 free throws (61.9 percent). Hampton also turned the ball over 18 times, to just 10 for the Spartans.

Norfolk State (12-10, 6-0 MEAC) shot 46.4 percent (26-for-56) from the floor and hit five of its 15 3-pointers (33.3 percent). The Spartans only shot 48.6 percent (17-for-35) from the free throw line.

The victory kept the Spartans perfect in MEAC play at 7-0 while improving their overall record to 12-10. Hampton fell to 5-13, 2-3 in conference play and dropped its third straight to the Spartans.

Junior Pendarvis Williams led the Spartans with 16 points and six rebounds, while senior Rob Johnson (13) and junior Malcolm Hawkins (11) also reached double figures.

Florida A&M Outlasts Maryland Eastern Shore, 55-54

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Jan. 26) -Florida A&M survived a close fought game as they defeated Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks, 55-54, Saturday at the Al Lawson Center.  The thrilling game came down to the last possession, with the Rattlers holding a one-point lead.  The Hawks had possession with 14 seconds remaining.  Their attempt would not fall, as the Rattlers and Hawks scrambled on the floor for the loose rebound until time expired, giving the Rattlers a thrilling victory.


FAMU (6-14, 3-3 MEAC) had a pair of Rattlers to score in double figures as Jamie Adams led the team with 18 points and four assists. Muhammad Abdul-Aleem chipped in 12 points and five rebounds.


UMES (1-14, 1-3 MEAC) had one player to score in double figures as Kevin Mays finished with a double-double of 20 points and 13 rebounds. Mays also contributed six points and a season-high in rebounds with 15.

Both teams shot similarly from the field as the Hawks shot 28-percent (17-59) and 58-percent (18-31) from the free throw line, while the Rattlers shot 34-percent (19-55) and 50-percent (12-24) from the free throw line.
There were eight lead changes in the game and the score was tied seven times. The Rattlers' largest lead was 10 with 14:26 left in the game.
