NCCU Falls To Howard, 56-30

DURHAM, N.C.- North Carolina Central remains winless in MEAC play, after falling to the Lady Bison of Howard University, 56-30, on Monday, Jan. 21 in Durham, N.C.   

Lady Eagle freshman Amber Neely topped the team with 11 points, while junior Tenika Neely followed with seven.  Freshman Aja Hoyle distributed three assists, as Amber Neely stole four Lady Bison possessions and freshman Tisha Dixon pulled down a team-high seven rebounds and blocked one Howard shot.

During the second half of play, Howard pushed ahead by as many as 28, before claiming a final 26-point victory of the Lady Eagles, 56-30.

As a team, NCCU shot 29.4 percent from the field on 10-for-34 shooting, collected a total of 26 rebounds, stole 11 Lady Bison possessions and shot an impressive 9-for-10 from the charity stripe.

Howard was led by senior Saadia Doyle who led all scorers on the night with 24 points. Doyle also led in rebounding with seven boards, stole three Lady Eagle possessions while shooting 10-for-12 from the field and 4-for-6 from the free-throw line.  In addition to Doyle's success, Kara Smith contributed 16 Lady Bison points and Cheyenne Curley-Payne scored eight while dishing out nine assists.

The Lady Bison shot 47.9 percent from the field on 23-for-48, 6-for-21 from the long range, and 40 percent from the free-throw line, 4-for-10.

NCCU drops to 0-17 on the season and 0-4 in MEAC play, as the Lady Bison advance to 10-7 on the season, 5-1 in the MEAC and 2-0 in the series.

Bethune-Cookman Tops Savannah State

SAVANNAH, Ga. - In their sixth MEAC game, Savannah State struggled to overcome a first half run from Bethune-Cookman, falling 41-50 to the Lady Wildcats in Tiger Arena, Monday evening.

Senior Erin Hogue led the Lady Tigers in the loss with her eighth (fifth consecutive) double-double of the season with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Blessing Uba followed with nine points and six rebounds.  Andrietta Thomas added nine points.

Bethune-Cookman shot 36.7 percent from the floor, but managed to hit only 3-of-13 (23.1 percent) free-throws.

Chastity René Taylor led all Lady Wildcats scorers, with 19 points for her 13th double-figure game this year, in addition to a career-high seven rebounds. Also hitting the glass hard, Shakeyia Colyer tabbed a 10-rebound career high on the boards, along with a season-high five assists. Also collecting double figures, Terrenisha Hollis hit 3-of-5 from the field and 3-of-3 at the line for 10 points.

FAMU Holds Off South Carolina State, 61-56

ORANGEBURG, S.C.  (Jan. 21)  - Florida A&M  picked up their fourth MEAC win of the season as they held on for 61-56 win over South Carolina State, Monday afternoon at Smith-Hammond-Middleton Center.

FAMU finished the contest shooting 35.7 percent (20-of-56), while SCSU shot 40.7 percent (24-fo-59).  

FAMU finished the first half shooting 31 percent (9-of-29), while SCSU shot 32.0 percent (8-of-35).

SCSU held the rebounding margin over the FAMU as they outrebounded the Lady Rattlers, 41-37.

The Lady Rattlers were paced by Jasmine Grice as she scored a game high 25 points, followed by Jamie Foreman as she recorded a double-double on the night scoring 10 points and pulling down 15 rebounds.

Ashley Clarke paced the Lady Bulldogs as she scored a team high 12 points and pulled down 10 boards, behind her was Tiara Knotts with nine.

The Lady Rattlers raises their record to 7-11 overall and 4-1 in the MEAC, while the Lady Bulldogs lower their record to 11-6 and 3-3 in conference play.

Spartans Outlast Morgan State 81-68

NORFOLK, Va. - Junior Aivah Parham had a career-high 34 points and 12 rebounds to snap a six-game losing streak as the Norfolk State women's basketball team defeated Morgan State 81-68 on Monday night at Joseph Echols Hall.

It was the Spartans first MEAC win of the regular season and the 81 points was the most scored by NSU all season.

NSU improved to 1-5 in the MEAC and 3-14 on the season while Morgan State fell to 2-3 in the conference and 5-13 overall.

Parham's 34 points was the first time an NSU player scored 30 points in a game since Feb. 25, 2012 when Whitney Long scored 32 points .

NSU held the Lady Bears to 30.8 (20-of-65) percent shooting from the field. Three Morgan State players reached double figures including Briana Coardes, who led the Lady Bears with 18 points. Bianca Jarrett logged 13 points and five rebounds and Whitney Southerland tallied 11 points in the loss to NSU.

Aside from Parham, Gordon was the only other Spartan in double-figures. She had her third double-double of the season as she finished the game with 25 points and 12 rebounds.

Hampton Defeats Coppin State, 58-50

HAMPTON, Va. - Larrisa Carter scored 15 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, but Olivia Allen scored 22 points and Hampton ended Coppin State's three-game winning streak with a 58-50 MEAC victory over the Eagles on Monday in the HU Convocation Center.

The Pirates used a 7-0 run late in the first half to take control of the game.

Hampton received 14 points and 10 rebounds from Keiara Avant and 12 points and seven rebounds from Nicole Hamilton.

Kyra Coleman finished with eight points and six rebounds for the Eagles, while Leola Spotwood added six points and six rebounds.

Hampton outrebounded Coppin State 48-40 and outscored the Eagles 32-20 in the paint.
