PRINCESS ANNE, Md. — Head Coach Frankie Allen of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore men’s basketball team will be inducted into the 2013 Virginia Sports Hall of Fame and Museum Monday. The announcement was made January 14 via the VSHFM office. Coach Allen is the all-time leader in points and rebounds in Virginia history.

 

Allen, a graduate of Roanoke College, was an all-American for the Maroon. A native of Charlottesville, Va., Allen has been considered one of the most prolific basketball players in Virginia history. He was one of the first African-Americans at Roanoke College in 1967, and helped lead the program to its first NCAA Tournament as a freshman.

 

His collegiate accolades continue with his sophomore year. At that time, he led the team in scoring, as was named to the first team of the All-Mason-Dixon squad and named All-American honorable mention. Allen was a two-time Virginia College Division Player of the year, earning the recognition in his sophomore and junior season.

 

In four years, he would amass 2,780 points and 1,758 rebounds, earning him the rightful position of state leader in both categories. At Roanoke, he averaged 24.0 points per game, 15.2 rebounds per game, and was the first player to be named to the All-state team all four years of college.

 

Coach Allen completed his collegiate career winning two Mason-Dixon tournaments, and helping the Maroons finish with an 82-34 record while he was a student-athlete.

 

Allen is in his 23^rd year as a collegiate men’s basketball coach. He has had stops at programs such as Virginia Tech and Tennessee State. At Tennessee State he won three Ohio Valley Conference titles, and made two appearances in the NCAA Tournament.
