North Carolina A&T powers by Lady Rattlers, 73-52

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Florida A&M Women's Basketball team dropped their first conference loss of the season as North Carolina A&T handed the Lady Rattlers a 73-57 defeat Monday night at the Alfred Lawson Center in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference action.

FAMU (5-11, 2-1 MEAC) had a pair of Lady Rattlers score in double figures as Jasmine Grice scored a game high 28 points, followed by Kimberly Sparkman with 18.  Patrice Collie led the Lady Rattlers on the boards with seven, while Andreya Lacy dished out a team high four assists.

N.C. A&T (10-6, 2-1 MEAC) had two Lady Aggies record a double-double as JaQuayla Berry scored a team high 19 points and pulled down 11 rebounds, followed by Tracy King with 14 points and 11 boards for N.C. A&T. Eboni Rose rounded out the cast of Lady Aggies to score in double-figures as she pumped in 17 points on the night.

The Lady Aggies jumped out to an 18-8 lead on a King layup with 13:16 to go in the first.  FAMU would then cut the A&T's lead to 24-17 on a Grice jumper at the 6:15 mark of the half. Berry would hit a field goal at the 5:08 mark to give the Lady Aggies a 27-17 lead.  Then both teams would endure a scoring drought as the next basket scored by either team would be an Amber Calvin three pointer for the Lady Aggies with 1:18 left in the first, giving A&T a 32-17 lead into the break.

A&T opened the second half with a 16-7 run as they took a 48-27 lead on an Ariel Bursey free throw with 11:04 to go in the game.

FAMU would cut A&T's lead to 48-35 on a Grice free throw with 8:51 left in the contest as that would be the closes that the Lady Rattlers would get.

NCCU Second-Half Battle Not Enough In 55-32 Loss To B-CU

DAYTONA BEACH, FLA. - In spite of a one point second half defecate against the Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman, 21-20, the Lady Eagles of North Carolina Central University could not outlast B-CU and fell 55-32 on Monday at Moore Gymnasium in Daytona Beach, Fla.

After trailing by 22 points at the end of the first-half, the Lady Eagles paced to an 8-3 run over the first four minutes of play in the second-half to break the margin to seventeen. 

Tenika Neely led NCCU with nine points, shooting 4-for-9 from the field and 1-for-1 from behind the arch while Kaylah Blount led NCCU defensively grabbing six boards while stealing one Wildcat possession and scoring two points. Aja Hoyle and Amber Neely also contributed six points apiece.   

The Lady Eagles found themselves in a first-half deficit after not scoring a field goal for the remaining nine minutes of half one.

NCCU brought the game as close as four points at 11-7 after a layup by Amber Neely at the 15:28 mark. B-CU ended the first half of competition on a 21-1 run, taking a 22 point lead into the locker room.

Following the halftime intermission, and NCCU's 8-3 run, the Wildcats pushed ahead by as many as 23 before capturing a 23 point victory over NCCU, 55-32.

Two Wildcat student-athletes finished with double figure scoring led by Terrenisha Hollis' double-double outing with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Hollis also dished out four assists, stole three Lady Eagle possessions and blocked two NCCU shots. In addition to Hollis' performance, Chastity Rene Taylor scored 15 points.

NCCU drops to 0-16 on the season, 0-3 in the conference as Bethune-Cookman advances to 7-8, 2-1 and progresses to 6-0 in the series.

Payne Career High Leads Eagles Past South Carolina State

BALTIMORE - Shawntae Payne scored a career-high 22 points and Coppin State began the game with a 16-0 run as the Eagles defeated South Carolina State 69-56 in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game in the Physical Education Complex.

Shanice Maynard and Ashle Craig each scored five points as Coppin State jumped out to a 16-0 lead with 14:35 to play in the first half.

Payne had eight first-half points and Leola Spotwood scored six as the Eagles maintained a double-digit lead for the remainder of the half and took a 37-24 lead into halftime.

South Carolina State (10-5, 2-2 MEAC) began the second half with a 13-4 run to cut the Coppin State lead to 41-37 with 12:15 remaining.

Coppin State (6-11, 2-2 MEAC) responded with a 17-5 spurt as Payne scored eight points and Janelle Lane had seven points to push the lead to 58-42 with 5:03 left in the game.

South Carolina State trimmed the lead to nine points on two occasions, but Payne scored five of the Eagles final six points to secure the victory.

The Eagles also received 12 points and seven rebounds from Kyra Coleman and 11 points and six rebounds from Lane. Spotwood added five points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

Tiara Knotts led South Carolina State with 15 points, while Mykala Jones added nine points.

Morgan State Ends Losing Skid With Victory Over Savannah State, 68-50

BALTIMORE, Md.-Morgan State's Bianca Jarrett scored a game-high 19 points to lead three Lady Bear players in double figures scoring as Morgan State defeated Savannah State 68-50 in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference match-up at Hill Field House on Monday evening.

The win ended a season-long six-game losing streak for the Lady Bears, who also put an end to a two-game home losing streak.  

Morgan State (5-11, 2-1 MEAC) also got 15 points from Tracey Carrington, who also tied Dinah Jones (four points) for team-high honors in rebounds with seven. Chyress Lockhart added 11 points for the Lady Bears.  

Savannah State (6-11, 1-3 MEAC) was led by Erin Hogue, who recorded a double-double with 18 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Jasmine Norman scored nine points and Jasmine Kirkland came off the bench to score nine points and pull down seven rebounds.  

The Lady Bears broke an 11-all tie with a 10-0 run capped off by a basket from Dinah Jones to give the hosts a 21-11 advantage with 9:23 to play in the first half.  

Savannah State would pull within 26-20 after two free throws by Jerryshia Williams, but the Lady Bears carried a 34-21 lead at the intermission.  

Morgan State increased its cushion with a 14-2 run in the second half to extend its advantage to 56-33, following a three-pointer layup by Jarrett with 8:57 left in the game.   The guests countered with a 14-2 run over the next four minutes to pull within 58-47 with 4:49 to play, but Morgan State sealed the deal with a 10-3 spurt for the win.

Doyle Lifts Lady Bison over NSU

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Despite leading Howard at halftime, the Norfolk State women's basketball team fell short to the Lady Bison, 56-45, on Monday night in Burr Gymnasium.

NSU fell to 0-4 in the MEAC and 8-7 on the season while Howard improved to 3-1 in the conference and 8-7 overall.

Howard got on the board early with a pair of back-to-back 3-pointers by Kara Smith with 19:07 left in the first half to lead the Spartans, 6-0.

Batavia Owen made the layup with 16:44 remaining before halftime as NSU continued to trail the Lady Bison, 8-4.

A jumper by Saadia Doyle, who led all scorers with 26 points and seven rebounds, with 10:50 left in the half would put the Lady Bison up 14-8.

From there a layup by Kristian Parker with 7:18 left remaining before halftime would cap a 6-0 run for the Spartans as they led Howard, 16-14.

Cheyenne Brown would score Howard's last points of the half as the Lady Bison went into halftime trailing NSU, 26-25.

Ebony Brown made a layup with 10:54 left to keep NSU within four as they trailed Howard, 37-33.

From there the Lady Bison went on a 12-2 run as Doyle banked a couple free throws with 2:58 remaining in the half to give Howard a 49-35 lead over the Spartans.  Doyle shot 15-of-22 from the free throw line.

NSU's last points of game came from Kashay Barnes as she drained a 3-pointer with 1:09 left in regulation.

Barnes led NSU with 14 points and three steals.  Rachel Gordon nearly had a double-double but finished the game with eight points and 11 rebounds.

Lady Hornets Cruise By Wesley 76-34

Dover, Del. - The Delaware State women's basketball team turned in its best shooting performance of the season in a 76-34 win over cross town rival Wesley in Memorial Hall. Playing its first home game since Dec. 15, the Lady Hornets were 34-for-60 from the field (56.7%) in the contest.

Tierra Hawkins led three Delaware State players in double figures with 22 points. Hawkins was 10-of-19 from the field and 2-for-2 at the free throw line. She has reached double figures in scoring in seven straight games, and 13 times in DSU's 15 contests.

Keyanna Tate added 12 points on five-of-six shooting, while Jade Washington came off the bench to tally 10 points and a game-high seven assists for the Lady Hornets.

Delaware State was ahead 10-6 before going on an 18-0 first half run to break open the game. Coreenah Redden capped off the run with a lay-up to give the Lady Hornets a 28-6 lead with 5:38 left in the first half.

DSU was eight-for-11 from field, while Wesley missed each of four shots and committed six turnovers during the Lady Hornet spurt. Hawkins had seven points and Tate four to key the rally.

Delaware State had a 9-0 run later in the half en route to a 45-13 lead at intermission.

Delaware State opened up a 57-17 lead on a lay-up by Kianna D'Oliveira with 14:12 left in the second half.

Heather Fuller and Karen Wearden led Wesley with eight points each. Fuller also pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds.

The Lady Hornets won for the second time in its last three games to improve to 4-11. Wesley fell to 2-13.
