Roach Lifts UMES Past NSU in Overtime

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Karona Roach had 31 points to lift Maryland Eastern Shore over Norfolk State 86-80 in overtime at the W.P. Hytche Center on Saturday afternoon.

Senior Recca Trice missed a free throw with 1.1 seconds left in regulation to send the Spartans (2-12) and the Hawks (5-8) into overtime tied at 66.

Roach made a layup in the first three seconds of overtime to give the Hawks a 68-66 lead over NSU.

Junior Kashay Barnes drained a 3-pointer at the other end with 4:20 remaining in overtime.  The Spartans shot 56.3 (9-of-16) percent from behind the arc.

UMES answered with a pair of 3-pointers by Shawnee Sweeney and Sha-Kiyla Finney with 3:28 remaining to give the Hawks a 74-69 lead over the Spartans.

Trice knocked down another 3-pointer for the Spartans with 2:43 on the clock as NSU trailed UMES, 75-72.

Alexis Udoji's layup with 1:50 left in overtime gave the Hawks a 79-72 lead over NSU.

Trice made a pair of free throws with 1:04 remaining in overtime but the Spartans continued to trail UMES, 79-74.

Roach, Finney and Jessica Long would shoot free throws the rest of the way to seal the win for the Hawks.

NSU had a collective effort in scoring as Barnes led the Spartans with 25 points, three assists and two steals.  Rachel Gordon finished the game with 17 points and eight rebounds, Ebony Brown had 14 points, and Trice added 13 points, six rebounds and eight assists.  The Spartans shot 46.3 (31-of-67) percent and held UMES to 37.3 (25-of-67) percent.

Aside from Roach, the Hawks had two other players in double-figures.  Finney tallied 14 points and six assists while Sweeney added 13 points.

Lady Pirates Squeak Past Rival Howard

WASHINGTON, D.C. -Hampton stormed back in the second half on Saturday afternoon at Burr Gymnasium, overcoming a 10-point deficit to defeat rival Howard 52-50.

Junior guard Nicole Hamilton led the Lady Pirates (12-5, 3-0 MEAC) with 19 points - including 15 in the second half - while senior forward Keiara Avant recorded her ninth double-double of the season with 10 points and a team-high 16 rebounds.

Junior forward Alyssa Bennett added seven points and a career-high 15 boards.

The Lady Pirates shot 36.7 percent (18-for-49) from the floor - including a 47.8 percent clip (11-for-23) in the second half. Hampton hit three of its 10 3-pointers and 13 of its 18 free throws. The Lady Pirates held a 41-25 edge on the glass.

Howard shot 38.9 percent (21-for-54) from the floor and hit three of its nine 3-pointers. The Lady Bison turned the ball over just 11 times.

Saadia Doyle led Howard (7-7, 2-1 MEAC) with 14 points.

Lady Wildcats Upset Aggies in MEAC Home Opener

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Lady Wildcats came away with a conference victory in Saturday's MEAC home opener at Moore Gymnasium, defeating North Carolina A&T, 69-64, on the strength of a powerful defensive full-team effort, snapping a three-game losing skid and collecting the first win over the Aggies in seven years.

Chastity Rene' Taylor logged double figures for the 11th time this season with her team-high 19 points; the 10th time she's led the team in scoring this season.  Shakeyia Colyer logged a season-high 17 points to aid the effort, along with four assists and five boards. Jasmine Evans joined the pair with 11. Hollis came up big on the glass, grabbing a career-high 11 rebounds, in addition to three steals and seven points.

Coppin State Posts First MEAC Victory of the Season

BALTIMORE - Leola Spotwood scored 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds and Larrisa Carter added 12 points and 12 rebounds as Coppin State posted its first MEAC victory of the season with a 57-53 victory over Savannah State on Saturday in the Physical Education Complex.

The Eagles, who shot just 35.6 percent from the floor for the game, outrebounded the Tigers 43-32 and forced Savannah State into 25 turnovers.

Coppin State recorded its first MEAC victory of the season after losses to Morgan State and Howard to open the season and improved to 5-11 overall and 1-2 in conference play.

Savannah State (6-10, 1-2 MEAC) got to within 56-53 with five seconds remaining, but Ashle Craig converted one of two free throws with 2.7 seconds to play to seal the victory.

The Tigers led for much of the first half before Coppin State closed the first half on a 7-5 run to take a 25-23 lead at halftime.

Kyra Coleman added eight points and seven rebounds for the Eagles, while Payne finished with seven points and five assists.

Andrietta Thomas led Savannah State with 19 points, while Erin Hogue had 13 points and 15 rebounds.

Dixon's 18 Boards Not Enough To Push NCCU Past Florida A&M

TALLAHASSEE, FLA. - North Carolina Central freshman Tisha Dixon collected a season-high 18 rebounds as the Lady Eagles fell to MEAC foe Florida A&M 52-35 on Saturday.

Dixon topped her season-high on the boards collecting the most rebounds by any Lady Eagle since NCCU hall of famer Cassie King grasped 19 rebounds on Feb. 7, 2004. Dixon also contributed a team-high of five points and two steals for the Lady Eagles.

As a team the Lady Eagles shot 26.8 percent from the field on 11-for-41 shooting, pulled down 32 boards, captured 10 steals, forced 23 Lady Rattler turnovers and shot 11-for-20 from the charity stripe.

FAMU was led offensively by Jasmine Grice who finished with a game-high 13 points, dished out four assists, and stole eight Lady Eagle possessions. Jamie Forman led the Lady Rattlers on the boards grabbing a team-high of 12 boards while contributing an additional 11 points while blocking two NCCU shots.

Collectively, FAMU knocked down 23 of their 53 shots from the field, shooting 43.4 percent, grabbed 35 total rebounds, dished out 14 assists and stole 23 Lady Eagle possessions while shooting 2-for-4 from the free throw line.

Second Half Surge Lifts SC State Over Morgan State

BALTIMORE-
SC State scored 50 second-half points en route to its 83-74 MEAC victory over Morgan State.  With the win, the Lady Bulldogs, who picked up its second win in a row, improved to 10- 4 overall and 2-1 in conference play.

Senior guard Tiara Knotts scored 10 of her game-high 15 points in the second half.  She also pulled in eight rebounds with three assists, one block and four steals.  Sophomore center Persephone Goodwin was equally as effective in the paint scored all 10 of her points in the second half while pulling in seven rebounds with two blocks.

Morgan State was led by Bianca Jarrett with 14 points.  Whitney Southerland dropped in 13 while Amarah Williams contributed eight points with seven rebounds for the Lady Bears, who dropped to 4-11 overall and 1-1 in the MEAC.

Ashley Clarke was very effective at the point guard position scoring 14 points with eight rebounds and five assists in her first game as a Lady Bulldog.  Senior guard Trinese Fox continue to contribute greatly off the bench with 11 points, five rebounds and four assists.
