Cross Country Recap: Sept. 7

Hornet Men And Women Each Fourth At DSU Invite

SMYRNA, Del. -Delaware State men's and women's cross country teams hosted their first meet of the season Friday afternoon and each placed fourth in their respective races at the Delaware State University Outreach and Research Facility.

The Hornet women finished with 98 points and were led by junior T'Nay Williams. Williams placed 14th overall with a time of 21:27.01, a nearly two-minute improvement over her race at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore last Saturday. UMES' Latitia Salley finished first overall with a time of 19:19.09.

Hampton won the women's 5k race with 37 points while Morgan State and Howard followed with 66 and 92 points, respectively.  UMES tied for fourth with Delaware State with 98 points.  Sixth place went to the District of Columbia with 144 points and Coppin State rounded out the scoring with 150 points in seventh place.

DSU freshman Anaya Reid finished the race in 22:51.58, good for 19th place overall and an almost two-minute improvement over her previous meet.  Fellow freshman Brianna Sims placed 21st with a time of 23:04.13 while graduate student Alisha Jones was 23rd in 23:13.95.  Another graduate student, Tracey Fan Fan, rounded out the scoring for the Hornets as she finished in 26th place with a time of 23:30.78.

On the men's side, freshman Terrell Oliver led Delaware State once again, this time finishing ninth overall with a time of 16:45.62.  UDC's Hillary Mugun won the men's 5k with a time of 15:31.88.

Howard University finished the men's race with a total of 33 points, good for first overall.  Hampton and UDC followed in second and third place with 77 and 102 points, respectively.  Coppin State finished fifth with 111 points while UMES was sixth with 113 points.  Morgan State placed in seventh with 126 points.

Sophomore Brandon Barnes and freshman Joshua Johnson finished back-to-back in 21st and 22nd place with respective times of 18:15.95 and 18:22.42 for the Hornets.  Junior Kevaughn Laviea placed 26th in a time of 18:40.07 while senior Stephen Bowe was 27th in 18:42.18.

Florida A&M Wins USF Invitational

TAMPA,FL (Sept.7) - The FAMU Rattlers cross country team took first place in the USF Invitational 8K cross country meet today. The Rattlers took the crown with 59 points, with four Rattlers in the top 20.
Sophomore Elias Cheshire led the Rattlers, coming in second place overall in a time of 26:23. Kevin Marindich took third place overall in a time of 26:50. Shuaib Winters III took home 10th place in 27:47. Lamere Buchanon came in 16th in 28:02.  Dieumy Duclos rounded out the team in 28:50, finishing 31st overall.

The final team scores were as follows: 1. FAMU (59), 2. Nova Southeastern (75), 3. Embry-Riddle (79), 4. University of Miami (90), 5. University of Tampa (101), 6. USF (126), 7. FAU (154), 8. St. Leo (196) and FIU (252).

Lady Pirates Win Hornet Invitational, Pirates Finish Second

SMYRNA, Del. -Hampton's women's cross country team won the Hornet Invitational hosted by Delaware State on Friday afternoon at the Delaware State University Outreach and Research Facility.

The men's cross country team finished second.

The Lady Pirates finished with 37 points, finishing nearly 30 points better than second-place Morgan State. The Pirates had 77 points, coming in second to men's team champion Howard.

Junior Devyn Thompson turned in the best individual performance for the Lady Pirates, coming in second in the women's 5K race with a time of 19:24.55. Juniors Nichelle Harris (Rahway, N.J.) and Cydney Robinson (Portsmouth, Va.) also finished in the top 10; Harris was seventh with a 20:14.03, while Robinson came in eighth with 20:42.55.

Senior Shaquanda Gainey ran a 20:42.81 to finish ninth.

Latitia Salley of Maryland Eastern Shore won the women's individual title with a 19:19.09.

Senior Xavier Fraction paced the Pirates in the men's 5K race, turning in a 16:55.11 to finish 10th. Senior Jaleel Rogers ran a 17:06.98 to finish 14th and junior Je'Von Hutchison was 15th with a 17:10.57.

Junior Larry Ramirez ran a 17:28.50 to finish 18th, while junior Evan Williams was 20th after running an 18:04.48.

Hillay Mugun of the University of D.C. won the men's individual race with a 15:31.88.
