The University of Maryland Eastern Shore volleyball team has the longest current home-winning streak in Division I, taking the number one spot on Thursday. The Hawks have won their last 24 matches in the Hytche Athletic Center, not having fallen in Princess Anne in almost three years.
UMES took the number one spot on Thursday after Texas fell to Minnesota in four sets, snapping its 33-match home-winning streak.
The last time UMES has been defeated at home was on September 26th, 2009, when the Hawks fell in three sets to Sacred Heart. Since then, UMES has swept a pair of home invitationals and won all conference matches in the Hytche. To add, until the team lost the third set against CSU Bakersfield last year in the UMES Hawk Invitational, the Hawks had won 53 sets in a row in Princess Anne.
"I am proud that UMES has one of the strongest home courts in the nation," says Don Metil, sixth year head coach of UMES, "this streak is a tribute to our fans and our team that make the Hytche a true home-court advantage."
Behind UMES in longest current home-winning streak is Furman, which has won its last 17 home matches.
The Maroon and Gray will look to extend the streak with the first home match on Friday, October 5th when UMES hosts Coppin State at the Hytche Athletic Center at 7 p.m.
