Volleyball Recap: Sept. 4

Stetson Sweeps Bethune-Cookman, 3-0

DELAND, Fla. - Bethune-Cookman saw a pair of big leads fade Tuesday night as Stetson posted a 3-0 (30-28, 25-13, 25-23) decision in a matchup of Volusia County rivals in the Edmunds Center.

The Lady Cats (0-8) jumped out to an 11-2 first set lead and were up 21-13 in the third before the Hatters (2-7) rallied to win both sets.

Krysta Gardner posted a double-double of 12 kills and 14 digs for the Lady Cats, while Delicia Pierre had 11 kills and six blocks. 

Janeen Davis finished with seven kills and 15 digs, and Aria Cormier posted three kills and eight blocks. Jennifer Jimenez had a team-high 16 digs.

Campbell Escapes NCCU With 3-0 Volleyball Victory

DURHAM, N.C. - North Carolina Central pushed the visiting Camels of Campbell beyond regulation in each of the first two sets, but Campbell rallied each time to escape McDougald-McLendon Gym with a 3-0 (27-25, 28-26, 25-15) women's volleyball victory on Tuesday night.

Sophomore Dayana Arrufat Rondon amassed a match-high 16 kills along with eight digs for NCCU (1-8), while rookie Christine Anthony added 14 kills, team-highs of nine digs and three service aces, and two blocks. Junior middle hitter Kalin Russell contributed three kills and a team-best four blocks for the Eagles.

Campbell (4-4) used a balanced offensive attack, powered by sophomore Jessica Groen with nine kills. Junior Lindsey Coats posted eight kills and freshman Katelyn Layden collected eight kills and a match-high 13 digs. Junior setter Heather Wilson controlled the Camels' offense with 30 assists to go along with five kills.

NCCU opened the match by scoring the first points and remained in control for most of the first set. Campbell chipped away at the deficit and pulled even with the Eagles at 18-18. The Eagles regained control by notching the next four points, capped by a kill by Arrufat, to go ahead 22-18.

NCCU had two set-point chances at 24-22, but the Camels fought back to tie the score at 24-24. Campbell took its first lead of the set at 26-25 thanks to a service ace by freshman Sam Zuber. Following an Eagles' timeout, a kill by Coats provided the visitors with the first-set victory.

A thrilling second set saw 15 ties and six lead changes. Once again, NCCU had two set-point opportunities at 24-23 and 25-24, but Campbell answered the challenge each time and stole the second set 28-26.

In the third set, Campbell blew open a 9-7 advantage by scoring seven consecutive points during the service of Zuber to take a commanding 16-7 lead. That proved to be too much of a gap for the Eagles to overcome, as the Camels won the third set 25-15.

Savannah State Falls To Charleston Southern

SAVANNAH, Ga. -Savannah State fell to Charleston Southern in three sets Tuesday night in Wilcox-Wiley Gymnasium. The Lady Tigers continue to search for their first win of the 2012 season, falling to 0-9.

Early in the opening set, Keandra Lewis gave SSU a 3-2 lead on a kill with a set from Ashlee Butler. The Buccaneers fired back as the teams went point-for-point tying the game three times.

Charleston Southern then extended their lead on a 5-1 run with four kills and a SSU error. The offensive push continued as the visitors extended their lead to a 10 point margin at 23-13, moments later.

The Lady Tigers fired back with a 4-1 run on kills from Chikia Jones, Bryana Gadis, and Bridgette Stephens. A costly service error ended the set as the Buccaneers took a 1-0 lead on a 25-17 set win.

In the second set, the teams went point-for-point tying the game four times, until Jones gave SSU a 10-9 lead on a kill with the set coming from Butler. Two SSU errors gave the Buccaneers an 11-10 lead moments later.

The visitors kept the momentum up, holding the Lady Tigers to only three more points as they took a 2-0 lead with a 25-13 set win.

Charleston Southern jumped out to a 7-3 lead early in the third set on a service ace. The Lady Tigers took advantage of some Buccaneer errors to cut the deficient. Lewis knotted the score up at nine on a service ace.

The Buccaneers jumped out to a 17-12 lead on two kills and several errors. The Lady Tigers continued to fight, but struggled with errors, going down 22-15 a few minutes later. Down 17-24, Lewis breathed some life into the end with a service ace for SSU. But the rally was short lived as a service error ended the match with a 25-18 Charleston set win.

Lewis and Gadis led the Lady Tigers with 7 kills apiece, while Stephens added 7 digs.
