NCCU's Brooks Runner-Up In HBCU Cross Country Challenge

CARY, N.C. - North Carolina Central's Amber Brooks was the second women's runner to cross the finish line at the HBCU Cross Country Challenge on a cool, rainy Saturday morning at Wake Med Soccer Park in Cary, N.C.

Brooks, who won this event as a rookie last year, shaved a second off of that time by finishing this season's 5k run in 19 minutes, 4.4 seconds, just 25 seconds behind the event champion, Kadian Dunkley of Bethune-Cookman. Those two out-ran a huge field with 105 challengers chasing them.

The next best runners for the Lady Eagles were sophomore Syrita Hunt (21:47.8) and junior Delesha Conquest (21:48.5) in 36th and 37th place, respectively.

As a team, the NCCU women placed seventh out of 16 teams

The NCCU men's team placed 14th out of 15 teams. The first to cross the finish line for the Eagles was freshman Quinn Burkhalter in 56th place with a time of 31:52.1 on the 8k course.

Lady Pirates Win HBCU Cross Country Invitational

CARY, N.C. -Hampton won the 2012 HBCU Cross Country Invitational on Saturday at the WakeMed Soccer Park.

The Lady Pirates won the meet for the third straight year, recording just 52 points.

The Pirates finished fourth in the men's 8K event, compiling 123 points. Norfolk State won the men's team title with 19 points.

Three Lady Pirates finished in the top 10, led by junior Devyn Thompson, who completed the 5K course in 19:31.50. Junior Ashley Armand came in eighth with a 19:50.70, while junior Nichelle Harris ran a 19:58.30 to finish 10th.

Senior Shaquanda Gainey came in 13th after running a 20:03.90, while junior Cydney Robinson ran a 20:15.80 to finish 15th. Junior Malekah Holland ran a 20:40.70 to finish 19th.

Freshman Kaylor Murray finished 27th with a 21:15.70.

Kadian Dunkley of Bethune-Cookman won the individual title with an 18:39.40.

Senior Xavier Fraction paced the Pirates with a 27:59.70 to finish 15th, while junior Je'Von Hutchison came in 21st after running a 28:22.10.

Sophomore Edose Ibadin came in 32nd after running a 29:21.70, while junior Larry Ramirez ran a 29:24.10 to finish 34th.

Sophomore Mohamed Labor-Koroma ran a 29:31.50 to finish 36th.

Natnael Meseret of Norfolk State won the men's individual title with a 25:26.00.

Spartan Men Take Top 4 Spots, Team Title at Great American Challenge

CARY, N.C. -Norfolk State dominated the field on Saturday morning at the Great American Festival HBCU Challenge in Cary, N.C., taking the top four individual places and the team title on the 8K WakeMed Soccer Park Course.

NSU finished the meet with 19 points.

A quartet of Spartan juniors rounded out the top four individual finishes.  Nathnael Meseret finished in first-place running a time of 25:26.00.  Damtew Adnew was second in 25:29.60, Vincent Rono finished third in 25:35.80, and Kipchirchir Kiptoo placed fourth crossing the line in 25:46.80.

Three freshmen rounded out the next top finishes for NSU as Desmond Fogg came in at 27:07.40 finishing 9th overall, Joshua Carino placed 17th with a time of 28:03.40, and Jerome Scurry, Jr. placed 30th with a time of 29:15.60.

Senior Aaron Dudley finished 44th in 30:42.00.59 and freshman Devon Booker placed 59th with a time of 32.20.00, respectively.

NSU Women Finish 6th at the Great American HBCU Challenge

CARY, N.C. -Norfolk State placed sixth at the Great American Festival HBCU Challenge on Saturday on the 5K WakeMed Soccer Park Course in Cary, N.C.

The Spartans finished with 162 points behind Hampton (52), Winston-Salem State (123), South Carolina State (134), St. Augustine's College (138), and North Carolina A&T (154).  North Carolina Central (172), Virginia State (188), Bethune-Cookman (199), and Benedict (204) rounded out the rest of the top ten. Chowan (277) finished 11th, followed by Lincoln (279), Bowie State (327), Livingstone (386), Shaw (402), and Johnson C. Smith (442).

Sophomore Kassandra Irizarry led the Spartans finishing 12th overall with a time of 20:00.00.  Freshman Rachel Webb placed 16th in 20:20.70.

Sophomores Rashaun Combs (21:53.20), Ariel Bartice-Smith (22:14.30), and Tori Lewis-Johnson (22:16.90) finished 39th, 47th, and 48th, respectively.  Freshman Purity Mitei crossed the line in 23:27.80 and placed 64th while junior Tyler Savage finished 82nd with a time of 25:39.50.

SC State Cross Country Teams Wrap Up HBCU Challenge

Lady Bulldogs finish an impressive 3rd place

CARY, NC-The South Carolina State men's and women's competed strong in the 4th Annual Robert Shumake this past weekend  at the Wake Med Soccer Park. The women finished an impressive 3rd, followed the men who didn't qualify for the team score due to limited runners

There were 16 women's teams and 15 men's team competing from HBCU's across the country. SC State had three runners to finish in the top 20 out of 105 participating in the 5K run. Once again it was junior Sherril McFarlane finishing as the  top runner for the Lady Bulldogs finishing in 5th place overall with a time of 19:27.4, while Sarai Waters (19:59.3) finished 11th and Tamara Smith (20:32.0) finished 17th.

On the men's side it was junior Seymour Walter finishing 11th with a time of 27:31.1, while junior Aaron Worthy Jr. was close behind with a time of 27:50.1, finishing 13th among 95 runners in the men's 8K.
