Coppin State Sweeps Norfolk State

BALTIMORE -- Ariel Richard had 10 kills and hit .421 leading Coppin State to a 25-18, 25-19, 25-18 MEAC over Norfolk State on Friday in the Physical Education Complex.

Richard had 10 kills in 19 attempts and only two hitting errors to finish with her best hitting percentage of the season.

With the victory, Coppin State improved to 6-7 overall and 2-0 in the MEAC. The Eagles have already surpassed last season's victory total and started the conference season with two victories for only the second time in school history. The 2005 Coppin State team began with three consecutive conference wins on its way to a 5-5 record in the MEAC.

Coppin State, which hit .269 for the match, also received six kills each from Bianca Chatman and Kendra Ireigbe, while Gabrielle Otero had 17 digs and Chelsee Sauni added 27 assists.

Ireigbe hit .500 for the match as she had only one hitting error in 10 attempts and Chatman hit .294 with one error in 17 attempts.

Norfolk State (2-16, 0-1 MEAC) was led by Charlotte Armstead who had 11 kills.

NCCU Wins Five-Set Thriller Over Rival North Carolina A&T


GREENSBORO-  The North Carolina A&T Aggies (0-20, 0-1) dropped a contest against the  North Carolina Central Eagles (3-16, 1-0) by 30-28, 22-25, 25-14, 23-25, 14-16 on Friday night in Moore Gymnasium.

The Aggies put together one of their best offensive performances of the year in their conference-opening match.   It was the second time this season that three players have collected double-digit kills, and the Aggies hit a season-best .237 in the match, with a season-high 63 kills.  

Senior Andrea Evans set a new career high with eight total blocks, and junior Chelsea Fox also set a new career high with 52 assists, to help the Aggies set a season-best 57 in a single match.  

Freshman Brooke Stamnes set a new season high with 18 kills, while freshman Ashley Johnson set a new season best with 30 digs.  

NCCU sophomore Dayana Arrufat Rondon amassed a career-best 23 kills and added 11 digs to lead the Eagles. Rookie Christine Anthony contributed 15 kills and a season-high 15 digs, while junior Kalin Russell recorded six kills, five digs and five blocks. Sophomore setter Alice Genna distributed 41 assists with 11 digs, while freshman defensive specialist Marilyn Sherbondy posted 13 digs.

SC State Defeats Bethune-Cookman in MEAC Opener

Daytona Beach, Fla.-Junior Desire Waller recorded a double-double, 28 kills and 20 digs, as the SC State women's volleyball team defeated Bethune-Cookman, 3-2, (23-25, 27-25, 25-27, 25-23, 15-11), in its MEAC opener.

SC State (4-7, 1-0 MEAC) had three players to record double-digit kills as sophomore Maya Bell put down 12, junior Taylor Bailey contributed 10 kills and Waller. Freshman setter Melanie Williams put up a season-high 61 set assists with 15 digs while senior E. Paige Webb picked up a game-high 25 digs in the contest.

Jennifer Jimenez had 25 digs as Bethune-Cookman remained winless on the season at 0-18 overall and 1-0 in the MEAC.


Krysta Gardner registered her 1,000th kill and finished with 21 and nine digs. The senior became the second player in B-CU history to reach the 1,000 kill level in the fourth set. She also had six service aces.

DSU Grabs First MEAC Win With 3-0 Sweep Of Howard

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Delaware State posted a season-high .435 attack percentage with 32 kills Friday evening en route to their first MEAC victory of the season with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-14, 25-15) rout of Howard at Burr Gymnasium.

Senior Laisha Davis led the way for the Hornets with a .875 attack percentage on seven kills and no errors.  The middle blocker also recorded two block assists and one solo block with one dig.

Fellow senior Bel Fakaosi posted a game-high 26 assists with nine digs.

Sophomore Edarkis Branch collected a game-high nine kills with a .467 attack percentage.  Junior Jessica Croucher also tallied seven kills for the DSU at a .312 mark.

After recording five errors in the first set, Delaware State went errorless in the final two with 23 kills on 37 total attacks for a .622 attack percentage.
