Spartans Finish Fourth at UMES Lid-Lifter Invitational

Princess Anne, Md. - The Norfolk State University men's cross country team started the season on a strong note picking up a top-ten overall finish at the UMES Lid-Lifter Invitational at the UMES Cross Country Course on Saturday.

The Spartans placed fourth as a team.  Jerome Scurry led all NSU runners placing sixth with a time of 19:18.  Devin Booker placed 11th running a time of 20:22.  Quentin Parker (22:24), junior Kenneth Smith (23:22), and Erick Green (27:22) had the next best finishes for the Spartans placing 15th, 20th, and 23rd

Women's Cross Country Takes Fourth at UMES Lid-Lifter

Princess Anne, Md. - The Norfolk State University women's cross country team placed fourth overall at the UMES Lid-Lifter Invitational on Saturday.

Freshman Rachel Webb led all NSU runners finishing 18th with a time of 23:17.  Sophomore Kassandra Irizarry had the second best finish for the Spartans placing 20th overall running a time of 24:04.

Sophomores Ariel Bartice-Smith and Tori Lewis-Johnson placed 25th and 26th running 25:16 and 25:41.  Rashaun Combs (27:18) placed 31st and Tyler Savage (28:26) placed 33rd.

Oliver Leads Hornets In First Collegiate Race

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - In his first collegiate cross country meet, freshman Terrell Oliver showed he's ready for the NCAA as he finished fifth overall with a time of 18:09.00 Saturday morning at the season-opening Lid-Lifter Invitational, hosted by the University of Maryland Eastern Shore.

Oliver's time led the Hornets to a second place finish of 51 points.  UMES won the men's race with 35 points while Morgan State was just behind Delaware State in third place with 59 points.  Norfolk State finished the scoring in fourth place with 75 points while Hampton were scoreless and finished sixth.

Morgan State runner Christian Smooth led all competitors with a first-place finishing time of 16:57.40.

Del State rounded out the top ten with sophomore Brandon Barnes in eighth place and senior Stephen Bowe in 10th.  Barnes finished the 8k race with a time of 20:13.00 while Bowe ran a time of 20:22.00.  Junior Kevaughn Laviea finished 12th in 20:55.00 while sophomore Bryan Pointer was 16th in 22:34.00.

On the women's side, the University of Maryland College Park swept the top seven spots to take first place with 15 points.  They were led by Anna Ruth's 19:13.00 in the top position.

Morgan State finished second with 64 points while the DSU women were third with 88 points.  Norfolk State collected 95 points for fourth place while UMES finished with 111 points in a fifth place finish.  Hampton finished sixth, but did not tally any points.

Junior T'Nay Williams was the top Hornet finisher in 19th place with a time of 23:23.00.  Freshman Anaya Reid and sophomore Ashley Robinson finished in 21st and 22nd with respective times of 24:33.00 and 24:37.00.

Coppin State Opens Cross Country Season at Baltimore Metro Invite

HUNT VALLEY, Md. - Irene Cherubet finished 33rd overall leading the Coppin State women's cross country team as it opened the 2012 season at the Baltimore Metro on Friday at Oregon Ridge Park in Hunt Valley, Md.

Cherebut was the Eagles top finisher as she completed the 5k course in 21:16.41.

The Eagles finished sixth in the team standings with 162 points, while Johns Hopkins won the team title with 17 points. Towson was second with 50 points followed by Goucher (101 pts), Hood (109 pts) and McDaniel (119 pts).

Lakayja Alston and Shena Brownell were the second and third CSU runners to cross the line. Alston finished 62nd in 24:44.82, while Brownell was 65th in 24:55.44.

Jennifer Mitchell and Nefertiti Brown rounded out the Coppin State scoring contingent. Mitchell was 72nd in 26:13.82 and Brown was 79th in 29:45.98.

Amanda Boykins also competed for the Eagles as she finished 82nd overall in 32:53.33.

Hannah Oneda of Johns Hopkins won the individual title by finishing first in a time of 18:19.13

HUNT VALLEY, Md. - Led by Andre Thomas, the Coppin State men's cross country team opened its 2012 season at the Baltimore Metro on Friday at Oregon Ridge Park in Hunt Valley, Md.

Thomas was the Eagles top finisher on the afternoon as he placed 22nd overall in a time of 17:14.17 over the 5k course. Hugh Prince was the second Coppin State runner to cross the finish line as he placed 34th overall in 18:23.76.

Led by Thomas the Eagles earned a fourth-place finish in the team standings with 92 points. Johns Hopkins finished first in the team standings with 15 points, while Hood was second with 69 points and McDaniel placed third with 72 points.

Michael McCoy, Robert Arrington and Imhotep Simba completed the Coppin State scoring unit. McCoy placed 48th in 21:25.62, Arrington finished 49th in 21:26.69 and Simba earned a 51st-place finish in 23:15.68.

Blake Anderson rounded out the Coppin State contingent by placing 53rd overall in a time of 24:51.94.

Max Robinson of Johns Hopkins captured the individual title in a time of 15:50.59.
