Bethune-Cookman Falls to Wyoming, 3-0

LARAMIE, Wyo. -- Bethune-Cookman concluded its stay in Wyoming with 3-0 losses to Florida Gulf Coast and George Washington Saturday in the Cowgirl Classic hosted by the University of Wyoming.

Senior Krysta Gardner had a season-high 16 kills in the 25-13,25-18,25-23 to FGCU. She posted 11 kills, eight digs and three service aces against George Washington.

Hampton Takes Two On Second Day of Stetson Tourney

DeLAND, Fla. -Hampton won both of its matches on Saturday in the second day of the Stetson Clarion Classic at the Glenn Wilkes Court at the Edmunds Center.

The Lady Pirates (4-5) beat Florida Atlantic 3-2 (20-25, 25-17, 23-25, 25-17, 15-10) in the morning match, before taking out host Stetson 3-1 (25-23, 25-23, 17-25, 25-22) in the nightcap.

Hampton took a 5-3 lead early in the first set against the Owls, thanks to a service ace from freshman Allysa Medina, and the Lady Pirates led 9-8 after a block from sophomore Krista Kraskura. Florida Atlantic went on a 7-1 run to take a 16-11 lead, and the Owls took control to grab the first set.

The Owls led 7-3 in the second set, before the Lady Pirates eventually clawed their way back and took a 12-11 lead. Florida Atlantic cut that lead to 15-14, but Hampton answered with six unanswered points, going up 21-14 after a kill from sophomore Marija Kocevska.

After tying the match at 1-1, the Lady Pirates jumped to a 4-3 lead in the third set after a service ace from senior Mariah Baylor (Minneapolis, Minn.). Florida Atlantic responded by taking an 8-6 lead later in the set, before Hampton scored four straight points to go up 10-8.

The teams went back-and-forth late in the third set, before the Owls eventually took control and took the third set 25-23 to go up 2-1 in the match.

Hampton opened the fourth set with a 7-1 run to seize control early, before the Owls scratched back to tie the set at 10-10 after going on a 9-3 run. Baylor and Kocevska later teamed on a block to put Hampton up 16-12, and from that point, the Lady Pirates ended the set with a 9-5 run.

The Lady Pirates hit .323 in the fourth set, before bettering that in the fifth set with a .421 hitting percentage. Hampton took a 5-4 lead in that set after a block from juniors Bibiany Fonseca and Petra Parros ,then Hampton closed the set outscoring the Owls 10-6.

Sophomore Sonja Maksimovic led Hampton with 14 kills and 11 digs on defense, hitting .205. Kraskura added 11 kills and 11 digs for her fourth double-double of the season. Fonseca hit a team-best .538, had nine kills, 38 assists, and five service aces.

Medina added 10 digs on defense against the Owls (1-3).

Stetson jumped to a 6-2 lead to open the first set of the nightcap, before the Lady Pirates fought their way back to tie the set at 9-9 after a service ace from Medina. Hampton later went up 14-13 on a Kraskura kill, before the teams traded points on several occasions.

The set was tied 23-23, before Maksimovic notched a kill and the Lady Pirates clinched the first set on a Stetson error.

Hampton hit a match-best .400 in the first set, with 17 kills and just three errors.

Hampton jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the second set, thanks to an ace from Kraskura, then went up 12-7 later in the set after a kill from Parros. Stetson went on a 7-2 run to tie the set at 20-20, before a Parros kill and a block from Parros and Kraskura put Hampton up 22-20.

Stetson tied the set at 23-23, but Hampton again closed out the set with back-to-back points.

The Hatters (1-7) took control in the third set, hitting .143 as a team and fending off Hampton after the Lady Pirates took a 14-13 lead on a block from Maksimovic and Baylor. Stetson used an 8-1 run to take a 21-15 lead, before closing out the set with another 4-2 spurt.

Kraskura notched a kill in the fourth set to put the Lady Pirates up 17-9, but the Hatters scored the next six points to close to within 17-15. Stetson later tied the set at 18-18, before Maksimovic recorded a kill to put Hampton back up 19-18.

Baylor and Kocevska blocked a shot to give the Lady Pirates a 22-18 lead, and Hampton held off a late Hatters rally to pick up its second straight win.

Kraskura notched yet another double-double - her fifth - with a team-high 17 kills and 15 digs. Maksimovic had 14 kills and nine digs, while Fonseca had 45 of the team's 50 assists to go along with 10 digs and four kills.

Eagles Split on Final Day of CSU Invitational

BALTIMORE -- Ariel Richard had 14 kills and was named to the all-tournament team leading Coppin State to a 25-17, 25-21, 21-25, 25-20 victory over Bryant to give the Eagles a split on the final day of play at the Coppin State Invitational on Saturday in the Physical Education Complex.

The Eagles, who finished tournament play with a 2-2 record, dropped their opening match of the day to Chicago State 25-23, 25-19, 23-25, 25-23.

Richard earned all-tournament honors after compiling 62 kills in four matches and averaging 3.88 kills per set. She also posted a .204 hitting percentage and had 27 digs, six service aces and two blocks.

Richard posted 14 kills and five digs in the victory over Bryant, which raised the Eagles record to 2-5 overall.

Coppin State also received eight kills from Cindy Okpegbue and five kills each from Kandace Thomas and Nicole Malave. Gabrielle Otero led CSU with 11 digs and Chelsee Sauni had 27 assists.

Richard had 14 kills and 11 digs in the loss to Chicago State, while Thomas had nine kills and Bianca Chatman had eight kills. Otero was the defensive star for Coppin State as she recorded a season-high 26 digs.

Aggies Falls in Coppin State Tourney

BALTIMORE-In the final day of action at the Coppin State Invitational tournament, the North Carolina A&T volleyball team fought two tough opponents at the Physical Education Complex, and lost a heartbreaker in five sets in their final match of the tournament. 

The Aggies was swept by Youngstown State, 10-25, 14-25, 15-25, in the morning match.  Freshman Brooke Stamnes led the team with six kills, and freshman Ashley Johnson led the team in digs with eight.  Senior middle hitter Evans had five kills in 13 attempts, had five block assists.   

The Aggies (0-8) faced Bryant in the afternoon at lost, 25-17, 23-25, 25-21, 11-25, 8-15.  It was their first five-set match since Oct. 1, 2010.  Stamnes led the team again with 10 kills.  Freshman Ali way posted a season-best 28 assists.  Evans continued her strong performance with five kills, five service aces (including three straight aces) and six block assists.    

The difference in the two matches was that A&T was better able to match up with Bryant than Youngstown State.

Against Bryant, the Aggies started off the first set with a block from Te'Borah Hawkins-Hollingsworth and Stamnes for the opening point following a long rally.  The Aggies kept pressuring the Bulldogs and climbed to an 11-6 lead. Bryant called a timeout and A&T emerged from the break and kept adding to their advantage.   A service ace by freshman Aleena McDaniel but the Aggies up, 20-14.  Hawkins-Hollingsworth tipped it for another kill to put the Aggies up by seven.  Stamnes then collected a service ace to secure the 25-17 victory.

Morgan State Takes Hornets to Four Sets; Prescott Records Double-Double

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (Sept. 1, 2012)-Jessie Genger finished with 13 kills and Kayla Beal added 10 to lead host Sacramento State to a 3-1 (25-12, 25-20, 23-25, 25-16) non-conference victory over visiting Morgan State on Saturday afternoon in Day 2 of the Sacramento State Invitational at Colberg Court.

Morgan State (0-5) was led by freshman Samantha Prescott, who recorded a double-double with a team-best 10 kills and 10 digs. Her double-double was the first this season for Morgan State, while her 10 kills made her the first Lady Bear in 2012 to reach double figures in kills.

Sacramento State (3-2) totaled 58 digs with Janelle Currey recording a match-high 16 digs. Hannah Hettinga and Sydney Kordic each added 10. The Hornets also tallied a 10-7 advantage in blocks over the Lady Bears. Olivia Moss had four blocks and Beal finished with three. Morgan State was led by Zuri Smith's four blocks and Janelle Wilson and Ngebui (Natalie) Chafeh finished with three apiece.

Despite a slow start and committing 26 attack errors and 14 service aces in the match, the Lady Bears, who probably played their best volleyball thus far, got stronger as the match continued.

Sacramento State rattled off eight straight points in part of a 10-1 run to take a 17-4 lead over the Lady Bears in the opening set, before winning 25-12. In the second set the Lady Bears trailed 16-10, before using an 8-3 spurt to pull within 19-18 after a kill by Prescott. Morgan State trailed 20-19 after Wilson and Chafeh combined on a block, but the hosts would score the next four points and win 25-20.

The Lady Bears jumped out to a 4-2 lead in Set 3 and extended it 10-4 with six straight points. Five times the Hornets would get within a point of Morgan State with the last time coming at 20-19, but each time the Lady Bears would hold off a run by Sacramento State.

Morgan State took a 24-21 lead after a kill by Nageeshie Plaud and eventually won 25-23 after an error by Sacramento State. The win was the first set victory of the season for Morgan State.

Morgan State hung with the Hornets early on in the fourth and final set and trailed 8-7 after a Prescott kill, before the hosts scored the next five points to surge ahead 13-7. The Lady Bears went on a 4-1 run to cut the deficit to 19-15, but Sacramento State would score six of the final seven points to win the set 25-16.

The Lady Bears finished with eight service aces with three coming from Arianna Hayden to go with her nine kills and six digs. Plaud also had a good match for the Lady Bears, as she totaled nine kills and seven digs. Chafeh recorded 32 assists.

Herringa notched 33 assists to go with her 10 digs to record for a double-double for the Hornets.

NSU Downs Providence, Falls to Robert Morris

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. -Norfolk State from a loss earlier in the day to down Providence, 3-1, after dropping a 3-1 contest to Robert Morris Saturday morning during the second day of the Robert Morris/Duquesne Invitational at the Charles L. Sewall Center.

Senior Charlotte Armstead led the Spartans, tallying 19 kills in the first match and then 22 against Providence. In that latter match, Armstead committed just one attack error in 35 swings, a .600 attack percentage. Fellow senior Beatriz Ferreira hit .462 with 14 kills to help NSU improve its record to 2-5 on the season.

NSU defeated Providence, 25-15, 18-25, 25-15, 25-23, after earlier falling to Robert Morris, 25-23, 22-25, 23-25, 16-25. The Colonials improved their record to 1-4, while the Friars fell to 1-7.

Freshman setter Darcy Moore totaled 87 assists over the course of the day, while redshirt sophomore Noelle Eagles added 19 and 21 digs, respectively. Junior Coralie Jarema contributed 10 kills, nine digs and five blocks against Robert Morris and then 12 digs, eight kills and three blocks against Providence

Lindsey Monger had 15 kills and 13 digs to lead Robert Morris, while Becky Jay had 10 blocks. The Colonials hit just .079 compared to .084 for the Spartans, but NSU had 14 more attack errors that negated its plus-16 advantage in kills.

UMES Shuts Out UNC Asheville And Kennesaw State

SAVANNAH, Ga. - The Hawks made their mark in the Tiger Invitational on Saturday, shutting out UNC Asheville 3-0 (27-25, 25-15, 25-21) and Kennesaw State (25-22, 25-17, 25-16) to go to 7-1 on the year, their best start to the season since 2002.  UNC Asheville fell to 1-6 after its match with UMES, while Kennesaw State dropped to 5-3.

UMES's 6-1 start is the best beginning to a season since 2002, when the Hawks under Toby Rens had a 7-2 record in its first nine matches.

Don Metil's team improves to 3-1 in the tournament and can earn second place in the Tiger Invitational with a win over Savannah State on Sunday.

Three Hawks earned double doubles against UNC Asheville.  Scoring 11 kills, 11 digs and five aces against the Bulldogs, Saitaua Iosia finished with 23 kills, eight aces and 17 digs, leading the Hawks in the two former categories.  Maline Vaitai, after getting 11 kills and 12 digs in the first match, had 21 kills, 14 digs and six aces.  Jessica Vicic earned 31 assists and 14 digs against UNC Asheville, totaling 67 assists, 20 digs and five kills on the day.  Kaveinga Lea'Aetoa hit .407 on the day, getting 15 kills and seven assists.

Against UMES, Christine Lakatos led UNC Asheville with eight kills and a pair of blocks.  Shelton finished with five kills and eight digs, while Davis had 13 assists, six digs, two aces and a pair of kills.

The Owls were led by Emily Bean against UMES, who totaled 10 kills and three blocks.  Keyaira Stevenson had six kills and three digs, while Baylee Strachan also had six kills.

NCCU VOLLEYBALL ROOKIE ANTHONY EARNS ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM HONORS AT ELON PHOENIX CLASSIC

ELON, N.C. - For the second straight weekend, North Carolina Central University rookie Christine Anthony came away from a volleyball event with all-tournament team honors, this time at the Elon Phoenix Classic hosted by Elon University.

A native of Willemstad, Curacao, Anthony recorded 37 kills and 24 digs in three matches on Friday and Saturday, including 15 kills and 14 digs in a 3-1 loss to Gardner-Webb University on Saturday.

As a team on Saturday, the Eagles opened play with a 3-0 (25-15, 25- 21, 25-15) setback to event host Elon. Anthony topped NCCU with 10 kills along with six digs. Sophomore Dayana Arrufat Rondon added seven kills and five digs, while sophomore Ashley McCarthy contributed six kills, eight digs and two blocks.

In NCCU's second match Saturday, the Eagles split the first two sets with Gardner-Webb before dropping the third set 27-25 and eventually the match, 3-1 (25-17, 25-27, 27-25, 25-16). Besides Anthony's aforementioned leading statistics, Arrufat chipped in 14 kills and nine digs, while redshirt freshman Denni Johnson collected 12 kills. Sophomore setter Alice Genna distributed a team-best 24 assists.
