B-CU Drops Two at Cowgirl Classic on Friday

LARAMIE, Wyo. - Bethune-Cookman dropped two matches at the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic Friday as Missouri- Kansas City and host Wyoming each posted a 3-0 victory.

UMKC (3-2) got a combined 21 kills from Emily Lucas and Brittant Fossier in posting a 25-10,25-18,25-15 decision while Wyoming (6-0) was led Jodi Purdy's seven kills and eight digs in a 25-12,25-15,25-13 victory.

Senior Krysta Gardner had 11 kills in the UMKC match and seven against Wyoming for B-CU, now 0-5. Gardner also had five digs and three blocks against UMKC.

Freshman Delica Pierre registered four kills in each match, while freshman Rhea Simon had three kills against Wyoming. Sophomore setter Aubrianna Curtis had 33 assists in the two matches, while Aria Cormier had five block assists against UMKC and two kills and two blocks against Wyoming. Junior defensive specialist Jennifer Jimenez had 11 digs in the Wyoming match.

Against UMKC, B-CU cut a 17-19 deficit in the second set to 19-17 before the Kangaroos closed the set with a 6-1 run.  B-CU had a 7-6 lead against Wyoming in the second set on a Simon kill, but the Cowgirls pulled away from a 9-9 tie with five unanswered points.

NCCU Battles Alabama, Drops Match At Elon Phoenix Classic

ELON, N.C. - North Carolina Central pushed SEC opponent Alabama to the limit in an extended second set, but the Crimson Tide held off the Eagles for a 3-0 (25-13, 30- 28, 25-16) victory at the Elon Phoenix Classic on Friday.

NCCU rookie Christine Anthony recorded a team-high 12 kills along with four digs to pace the Eagles. Redshirt freshman Denni Johnson contributed a season-best seven kills in the setback.

After Alabama defeated the Eagles 25-13 in the opening set, NCCU regrouped to go toe-to-toe with the Crimson Tide. The two squads battled throughout the set, with NCCU overcoming a 23-20 deficit to even the set at 25-25. The Eagles took leads of 27-26 and 28-27, but the Tide rolled off three straight points to capture the second set.

 NCCU fell behind 11-3 early in the third set, allowing Alabama to post a score of 25-16 for the match sweep.

Hampton Drops Two On First Day Of Stetson Tourney

DeLAND, Fla. -Hampton dropped both of its matches on Friday in the Stetson Clarion Classic held at the Glenn Wilkes Court in the Edmunds Center.

Central Arkansas beat the Lady Pirates 3-0 (25-16, 25-13, 25-19), before Wofford beat Hampton in the evening match 3-1 (23-25, 25-19, 26-24, 25-15).

Sophomore Krista Kraskura led Hampton with eight kills and nine digs on defense, while  Ioana Kalfinova had a team-best .364 hitting percentage with four kills and no errors in 11 attacks. Allysa Medina added eight digs.

Junior BIbiany Fonseca had 20 of Hampton's 23 assists.

The Lady Pirates bounced back in the first set of their match against Wofford, going up 15-10 after a service ace from Marija Kocevska. The Terriers battled back to take a 20-18 lead, before later going up 22-20. In fact, Wofford led 23-21, but Hampton responded with four straight points - a Maksimovic kill, a block from Kocevska and Fonseca, a block from Kraskura and Kocevska, and another Maksimovic kill - to clinch the set.

Wofford (3-2) waged a back-and-forth battle with Hampton in the second set, though the Lady Pirates led 16-14 after Maksimovic tipped in a kill. From there, the Terriers went on a 12-4 run to take the second set and tie the match at 1-1.

Maksimovic led the way with a career-high 18 kills to go along with 14 digs on defense for her third double-double of the season. Kraskura added nine kills and 16 digs. Medina also had 16 digs to tie for the team lead.

Fonseca had 36 of Hampton's 39 assists.

Volleyball Drops Opener of Sacramento State Invitational to Saint Mary's (Calif.)

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (Aug. 30, 2012)- Morgan State returned to action on Friday afternoon and dropped a 3-0 (25-5, 25-15, 25-12) non-conference decision to Saint Mary's (Calif.) in the opening match of the 10th annual Sacramento State Invitational at Colberg Court.

Dalas Dodd notched a match-high 33 assists, a match-high five blocks and chipped in six service aces to lead the Gales, who improved to 2-0 all-time against Morgan State. Lauren Corp tallied a match-high nine kills, while Sarah Reams had a match-high 10 digs.

Saint Mary's (2-2) jumped out to a 12-0 lead in the first set before a serving error on the Gales gave the Lady Bears their first point. Trailing 16-1, back-to-back kills from freshman Arianna Hayden gave the Lady Bears their first offensive points of the contest, cutting the deficit to 16-3. Saint Mary's then countered with a 9-2 spurt to claim the first set 25-5.

Morgan State (0-4) overcame a 6-3 deficit in the second set and pulled within 9-8, before the Gales used a 5-0 run to increase their advantage to 14-8. The Lady Bears cut the deficit to four (16-12), before Saint Mary's went on a 7-1 spurt to take control at 23-13, eventually winning the second set 25-15.

Morgan State seemed to have put things together in the third set, as it took a 5-1 lead. The Gales quickly responded with a 6-1 run to reclaim the lead at 7-6. Saint Mary's then extended its advantage to 19-10 with a 12-4 run and went on to win 25-12.

Hayden led the Lady Bears with a team-high seven kills and four digs, while senior Ashley Johnson added four kills and five digs. Fellow senior Ngebui (Natalie) Chafeh recorded 14 assists and a team-high seven digs to go with two kills and a solo block.

North Carolina A&T Falls to Coppin State and Chicago State

BALTIMORE-The North Carolina A&T volleyball team won two more sets and saw some strong individual performance in their first two matches in the Coppin State Invitational tournament, but finished Friday with a pair of tough losses in four sets against both Chicago State and Coppin state.

In the first match against Chicago State (1-5), the Aggies (0-6) lost by 25-23, 14-25, 20-25, 23-25 to the Cougars.  The Aggies lost 23-25, 13-25, 25-23, 24-26 in the second match, against host Coppin State (1-4). 

Against Chicago State, freshman Aleena McDaniel posted a team-best 15 kills, which also marked the most kills by an Aggie this season.  Freshman Brooke Stamnes recorded a double-double with 12 kills and 11 digs.  It's the first double-double by an A&T player since Jeana Daniels had 11 kills and 11 digs on Aug. 28, 2010 against UNC Wilmington.   Freshman Ashley Johnson also set a new team and individual season high with 29 digs.   

Sophomore Aprill McRae ended the match against Coppin State with 15 kills in 23 attempts for a .652 hitting percentage-which is the second highest percentage in a single match since 2002, and just the sixth time that an A&T player has hit over .600 since 2002.  Current assistant coach Arlene Mitchell posted a .667 percentage on Sept. 13, 2003.  The last time an A&T player recorded a hitting percentage over .600 was when Tatiana Cooper hit .619 on Sept. 3, 1010.  Junior Chelsea Fox also set a new career best with 40 assists in the contest as well.

 Loyola, Duquesne Hand NSU Pair of Losses

PITTSBURGH, Pa. -Norfolk State suffered a pair of 3-0 defeats Friday in the Robert Morris/Duquesne Invitational, falling to Loyola (Md.) in the morning before another setback to Duquesne in an evening affair.

NSU fell to the Greyhounds to open the tournament, 25-23, 25-14, 25-22, at Robert Morris' Charles L. Sewall Center. Duquesne then made quick work of the Spartans in the nightcap, 25-17, 25-10, 25-7, at the A.J. Palumbo Center.

Juniors Coralie Jarema and Goda Jankauskaite, the latter of whom was making her NSU debut, each had eight blocks against Loyola as NSU held a 13-6 advantage in that category. The Greyhounds, though, hit a solid .216 for the match and had 15 more kills than the Spartans, who hit .111.

Senior Charlotte Armstead had nine kills to lead NSU against the Dukes, who hit a blistering .488 for the match with just five attack errors. Duquesne had an 11-2 advantage in blocks and were led offensively by Allison Foschia and Ashley Buse with 13 and 11 kills, respectively.

UMES SPLITS MATCHES ON DAY ONE OF TIGER INVITE, SNAPS 23-STRAIGHT REGULAR SEASON WIN STREAK

SAVANNAH, Ga. - UMES stopped a Southern Utah comeback attempt in its first match of the day to win 3-2 (25-14, 25-14, 23-25, 21-25, 15-7), finishing with its first defeat of the year to New Mexico 3-1 (25-22, 18-25, 17-25, 23-25).  The Hawks move to 4-1, snapping a 23-straight regular season match winning streak.  SUU went to 0-4 after the match with UMES, and New Mexico goes to 5-1.

The last time UMES lost a regular season match was back on September 24th, 2011, when the Hawks fell to Campbell in five sets in the High Point Invitational.

Saitaua Iosia earned a double double against Southern Utah with 21 kills, 19 digs, and six aces, finishing the day with 36 kills, eight aces and 26 digs.  Maline Vaitai combined for 22 kills and 11 digs, Ibe had 11 kills and 10 blocks total, and  Kaveinga Lea'Aetoa tallied 14 kills, seven aces and a trio of blocks.  Bridget Ebster-Schwarzenberger was a perfect 4-4 in attacks in the match against New Mexico.

In the match vs. UMES, Cashanna Renfro led Southern Utah with 13 kills, hitting .455 in the match, with three blocks.  Ana Mailoto earned a double-double with 12 kills and digs, adding three blocks.  Gabi Mirand constructed a line of 33 assists, three aces, seven kills and five digs.

Chantelle Riddle finished with 20 kills and four blocks for New Mexico, with teammate Alijah Gunsalus earning a double double with 10 kills and 12 digs.  Elsa Krieg had four kills and a team-high five blocks, tying that mark with Lexis Ross, who added three kills.

CROUCHER AND REDMON LEAD DSU; HORNETS FALL, 3-1

EASTON, Pa. -Delaware State fought for a first-set win, but then dropped the next three as Lafayette took a 3-1 victory Friday evening to kick off the Lafayette College Tournament at the Kirby Sports Center.

Juniors Jessica Croucher tallied a double double with 13 kills and 14 digs in addition to three aces and a block assist while fellow junior Brooke Redmon recorded 12 kills and a team-leading .381 attack percentage.

Freshman Jasmine Jackson (South Riding, Va.) led the Hornets with 15 digs and added in nine kills and three aces.  Senior Laisha Davis (Riviera Beach, Fla.) also notched double-figure digs with 10. Senior Bel Fakaosi led all with 38 assists.

The first set was a back and forth affair featuring eight ties.  A Redmon kill off of a Fakaosi feed broke the final 19-19 tie mark, giving the Hornets the momentum they would need to earn their first set victory of the season, 25-23.

The momentum shifted in the second set as the Leopards took their largest win of the night, 25-16.  Del State recorded their lowest attack percentage of the night (.032) while Lafayette posted their highest (.379).

In the third, controversy settled in as a dispute over the serving rotation led to an approximately 15-minute delay with the Leopards up, 15-11.  After the break, the Hornets fought to pull even at 24-24.  The set went into extra points before Lafayette took the 29-27 win.

Things stayed close in the fourth set, but the Leopards pulled away with the 25-22 victory to seal the 3-1 match win.

With the loss, the Hornets fall to 0-4 on the season while Lafayette stayed undefeated at 3-0.

Karissa Ciliento posted 13 kills for the Leopards while Camissa Beghou and Danielle Towslee added nine and seven kills respectively.  Lafayette boasted two double-digit defensive performances as Michelle Woodworth collected 16 digs while Kaitlynn Zoller added 10.
