Returning guard Blessing Uba turned on the heat in the second half of an exhibition game with Toronto Team X in Toronto, Canada Wednesday night scoring 19 points, as Team X skimmed out a 77-73 win over the Lady Tigers at George Brown College.
Uba led the field overall with 28 points, just ahead of 2009 Norfolk State University product, Tashawna Higgins who finished with 21 for Team X. Also in double digits for the Lady Tigers was sophomore Jasmine Norman who finished with 12, and University of Alabama transfer Erin Hogue who scored 10.
Team X came out of the gate firing, jumping to a 9-0 lead in the first three minutes. The Lady Tigers struggled to find a groove, missing 12 shots in the first four minutes. Savannah State’s offense showed up midway through the first half as Uba hit a short jumper at the 12:34 mark to make it 16-11, Team X.
Working the fast transition, Savannah State drew multiple fouls, making Toronto pay at the charity strip. Uba dropped two free throws at the 11:07 mark to cut Team X’s lead to four, 19-15. Freshman Jerryshia Williams came off the bench to help the Lady Tigers with a couple of baskets. Williams scored eight points overall in the contest.
With 3:50 left till the half, Uba dropped a 3-pointer to make it 34-30, Toronto. Team X responded with a trey from Higgins 20 seconds later and continued on that momentum to take a 43-34 lead into the locker room.
The second half opened as the first did, with Team X jumping out to a 49-34 lead, behind a 6-0 run in the first two minutes.
With 16:58 remaining, Norman sank a jumper for the Lady Tigers first score of the second half. Hogue followed seconds later with a layup to cut Toronto’s lead to 12 at 52-40.
With 8:28 on the clock, Uba caught a fast break for a layup, cutting the deficient to seven points, 57-50. From there on, it was all Uba. The junior went on a 7-3 run, culminating with a layup at the 4:26 mark to make it 63-59, Toronto.
The spark gave Savannah State a chance for the win as head coach Cedric Baker put on the full press in the waning minute. With 34 seconds reaming the Lady Tigers trailed 68-72, but some costly turnovers produced baskets on the opposite end. Team X held a 76-68 lead with 24 seconds left, and the late offense from Toronto proved to be too much for the Lady Tigers.
Savannah State concludes the preseason exhibition Thursday with two games. They will face The Toronto Club and George Brown at 3 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., respectively.
