HAMPTON, Va. -Hampton won its home opener in Holland Hall on Tuesday afternoon, defeating Radford 3-1 (25-13, 25-22, 26-28, 25-23).
The Lady Pirates (2-3) snapped a three-match losing streak and picked up their first win over the Highlanders in four meetings.
Hampton opened the first set with a 6-2 lead following a service ace from sophomore Krista Kraskura. Junior Petra Parros then put the Lady Pirates up 8-3 with a kill, and Hampton later went up 10-4 after a kill from junior Bibiany Fonseca.
Ultimately, the Lady Pirates used an 8-0 run in the first set to take a 16-4 lead after junior Ioana Kalfinova registered a kill, and she added another kill later in the set to put Hampton up 20-9.
Hampton hit .194 in the first set, with 12 kills and five errors, but Radford recorded just three kills and seven errors in 34 attacks in the first set, winding up in the red with a -.118 hitting percentage.
Radford (2-2) led 4-3 early in the second set, but Hampton took a 5-4 lead after a Kraskura kill. The Highlanders took another lead, going up 11-9, but Hampton answered with four straight points to take a 13-11 lead after a service ace from freshman Allysa Medina.
Radford went up 15-14 later in the set, but once Kraskura recorded a kill to put the Lady Pirates up 16-15, Hampton didn't look back for the rest of the set.
Hampton hit a match-best .333 in the second set, recording 10 kills and just three errors in 21 attacks. Radford had a positive hitting percentage (.138) in the second set, but still committed seven errors in that set.
Sophomore Sonja Maksimovic gave the Lady Pirates a 5-3 lead with a kill early in the third set, before the Lady Pirates went up 7-3 after a Kalfinova kill. From that point, the Lady Pirates outscored Radford 8-7 to take a 15-10 lead before the Highlanders called a timeout.
Radford came out of the timeout and scored five straight points to tie the set at 15-15, before Hampton regained a 16-15 lead. The two teams exchanged points until Hampton took a 20-18 lead after a Medina ace and a block from senior Mariah Baylor (Minneapolis, Minn.), but Radford scored four straight points to go up 22-20.
The Highlanders then led the third set 24-22, before Hampton scored three straight points to take a 25-24 lead and force match point following a kill from sophomore Andjela Petrovic (Belgrade, Serbia). Radford tied the set before taking a 26-25 lead, then Maksimovic tied the set at 26-26 with a kill.
Radford scored the last two points to take the third set.
Hampton took a 9-6 lead in the fourth set after a kill from Kraskura, and the Lady Pirates would go on to expand that lead to 15-10 after a Baylor kill. The Highlanders tried clawing their way back, but Kraskura gave Hampton an 18-15 lead with another kill.
Radford managed to tie the fourth set at 19-19 before taking a 20-19 lead. Fonseca tied the set at 20-20 with a kill, before Baylor blocked a Radford attack to give the Lady Pirates a 21-20 lead. Radford tied the set again, before Kraskura gave Hampton back the lead for good.
Hampton's last four points were kills from Kraskura.
Kraskura led the Lady Pirates with her fourth double-double in five matches this season, recording 21 kills and 17 digs on defense. She hit .370 for the match, with just four errors in 46 total attacks. Maksimovic and Kalfinova each had six kills.
Fonseca, on top of recording 30 of Hampton's 37 assists, hit .429 with four kills and one error in seven attacks. She also had 13 digs.
Maksimovic led Hampton with a career-high 21 digs.
