Hampton Volleyball Falls to UNC Greensboro in Four Sets
DURHAM, N.C. -Hampton fell in four sets to North Carolina Greensboro on Saturday in the North Carolina Central Invitational at McDougald-McLendon Gymnasium, as UNC Greensboro won 3-1 (20-25, 25-12, 25-16, 25-18).
The Lady Pirates (1-2) led 4-2 early in the first set following a kill from freshman Allysa Medina. The Spartans fought back to tie the set at 6-6, before Hampton took an 8-6 lead after a kill from sophomore Krista Kraskura and a service ace from senior Mariah Baylor.
UNC Greensboro used a 4-1 spurt to take a 10-9 lead, before Kraskura gave the Lady Pirates the lead back with a kill to put Hampton up 11-10. The Spartans would lead again, 15-14, but Hampton went on an 11-5 run to take the set by five.
Hampton hit a match-best .394 in the first set, recording 14 kills and just one error in 33 attacks. The Spartans also had 14 first-set kills, but UNC Greensboro also committed seven errors in the set.
Hampton went up 4-1 to open the second set, but the Spartans stormed back, going up 9-5 after going on an 8-1 run. Hampton scored three straight points to cut the lead to 9-8 after a service ace from sophomore Marija Kocevska (SkopjeKarpos, Macedonia), before UNC Greensboro went on a 10-1 run to take an 18-10 lead.
UNC Greensboro won the second set by hitting .348 as a team, with 12 kills and just four errors.
The Lady Pirates opened the third set with a 4-1 lead, before the Spartans scored five unanswered points to take a 6-4 lead. A Kraskura kill later in the set tied the score at 8-8, before UNC Greensboro scored five straight points to go up 13-8.
Junior Ioana Kalfinova recorded a kill to close the gap to 13-9, but the Spartans never relinquished control in taking the third set to take a 2-1 lead in the match. The Spartans hit .387 (17 kills, five errors in 31 attacks) in the set.
UNC Greensboro (3-0) opened the third set with a 9-3 lead, taking immediate control. Kraskura later chopped the Spartans' lead to 13-6 with a kill, but the Spartans again took control. Kraskura cut the lead to 18-11 with a kill, but UNC Greensboro held on to take the match.
Kraskura led the Lady Pirates with 12 kills to go along with 11 digs for her third straight double-double to open the season. Junior Patra Parros hit a team-best .333 with seven kills and just two errors in 15 attacks.
Karrian Chambers led three Spartans in double-digit kills with 17.

Florida Chomps Lady Rattlers, 3-0
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (Aug. 25) - Florida A&M dropped its second match of the Comp USA Volleyball Tournament as the University of Florida handed the Lady Rattlers, a 3-0 (11-25, 11-25, 25-14) Saturday afternoon at the O'Connell Center.
FAMU (0-2) was led by Katherine Huanec as she recorded a team high seven kills followed Maria Ceccarelli with six. Diana Gonzales led the Lady Rattlers in assists with 14, while Karol Marquez recorded a team high 14 digs.
UF (2-0) had a duo of Gators to finish in double-digit kill as Ziva Peck finished with 12 kills, followed by Chloe Mann with 11. Taylor Brauneis led the team in assists with 21, while Taylor Unroe finished with 12 digs.

St. John's Sweeps Lady Eagles, 3-0
BALTIMORE -- Ariel Richard had six kills and five digs and Cindy Okpegbue added four kills, but St. John's defeated Coppin State 25-17, 25-19, 25-12 on Saturday at the Battle at the Bay Tournament at Morgan State.
Coppin State, which dropped to 0-2 on the season, also received 10 digs from Gabrielle Otero and 16 assists from Chelsee Sauni. Nicole Malave chipped in six digs for the Eagles.
St. John's (2-1) was led by Karin Pagulatova who had 12 kills and Shawna-Lei Santos who had 10 kills.
The Red Storm hit .260 for the match, including a .407 hitting percentage in the first set.
The Eagles hit -.035 for the match with 20 kills and 23 errors.
Coppin State Falls Towson, 3-0
BALTIMORE - Cindy Okpegbue had a season-high nine kills and Ariel Richard had six kills, but Coppin State dropped its final match of the 2012 Battle at the Bay Tournament to Towson on the Saturday at Hill Field House.
Towson, which improved to 3-0 on the season, swept the Eagles 25-11, 25-22, 25-9 in both team's final matches of the tournament.
Alysha McCreary led Towson with a match-high 10 kills and Katy Buck added eight kills for the Tigers. Towson hit a solid .322 for the match, while Coppin State was limited to just a .074 hitting percentage.

SC State Goes 1-1 on the Final Day of the Big Orange Bash
Clemson, S.C.- SC State went 1-1on Day Two of the Big Orange Bash hosted by Clemson University. The Lady Bulldogs finish the two-day tournament, with a 1-2 record.
In Match One of the day, SC State (1-2) fell to Clemson, 3-0, (11-25, 15-25, 17-25). The Tigers controlled match throughout, holding the Lady Bulldogs to just a .070 hitting percentage for the match. E. Paige Webb continued to play solid offensively for SC State as she put down seven kills with eight digs. Maya Bell also had seven kills and contributed six digs with two block assists. Freshman setter Melanie Williams put up 20 set assists with one block solo and two block assists in the loss. As a team the Lady Bulldogs recorded 23 kills with a six team blocks.
Clemson had three players to record double-digit kills led by Kristin Faust with 12. Sandra Adeleye put down 11 and Moneshia Simmons had 10. Natalie Patzin picked up a game-high 13 digs while Simmons had nine with one block solo and four block assists.
Game Two on the day was a battle between SC State and Coastal Carolina from start to finish. The teams exchanged points throughout the First Set with Coastal Carolina coming away with a 25-23 Set One victory. SC State rallied to take Set Two by the same margin, 25-23. Set Three of the match was perhaps the most competitive set of the match. Coastal Carolina took the early set advantage with a 12-9 lead. The Lady Bulldogs rebounded quickly using a 6-1 run to take a 15-12 lead and never relinquish it. The Chanticleers managed to tie the set at 17-17 but the Lady Bulldogs kept pressing, eventually winning Set Three, 25-20. Coastal Carolina completely controlled Set Four, jumping ahead 6-3. The Chanticleer's pushed their lead to as many as seven, 17-10, before going on to win the set, 25-20. Set Five belonged solely to SC State. The Lady Bulldogs jumped out to an early 7-4 lead and used an 8-5 run down the stretch to take Set Five 15-8, and the match 3-2.
Junior Alyse Lewis had a career match recording career-highs in kills and blocks. For the match she had 10 kills and 8 total blocks including five solos. The Lady Bulldogs had four players to finish the match with double-digit kills as senior Paige Webb had 17, newcomer Maya Bell had 14, freshman Shandice Sluch had 10 and Lewis. Webb recorded her first season double-double picking up a team-high 16 digs in the contest. Freshman Melanie Williams also recorded a double-double with 45 set assists and 11 digs, while sophomore Dorian Corbett contributed 11 digs in the victory.
Meghan Laffin led Coastal Carolina offensively with 19 kills. Lian Bernett added 12 kills with nine digs as the Chanticleer's fell to 0-3 on the season.
Tournament Notes: Paige Webb was named to the All-Tournament Team finishing the three matches with 31 kills (2.82), five assists and 35 digs.

Bethune-Cookman Falls in Final Two Matches at East Carolina Classic
GREENVILLE, N.C. - Bethune-Cookman lost both its matches in the East Carolina Classic Saturday as the host Pirates defeated the Wildcats 3-1 (25-17,20-25,25-12,25-8) while Campbell posted a 3-0 (25-10,25-13, 27-25) victory.
B-CU tied ECU 1-1 after two sets. Down 12-3, B-CU (0-2) took an 18-17 on an Aubrianna Curtis service point, then pulled away from a 19-19 tie with a five-point Jennifer Jimenez service run that featured freshmen Delicia Pierre and Phlyecia Armstrong combining for three block points. Pierre registered set point with a kill off a Curtis assist.
Senior Krysta Gardner registered a double-double of ten kills and ten assists for the Wildcats Lady 'Cats. Pierre had six kills, four block assists and two service aces, while freshman Destiny Hudson added four kills.
Curtis had 21 assists and five digs while freshman Monica Lowe, who started at libero, had nine digs.
Against Campbell, Gardner had 11 kills and seven digs, Curtis 24 assists and 8 digs while Hudson finished with nine kills. Lowe, named to the all-tournament team, had ten digs.

NSU Splits with Navy, Hartford
ANNAPOLIS, Md. -Norfolk State won its first match of the season and then split the day's contests, downing Navy, 3-1, before falling to Hartford, 3-1, Saturday at the Kristen Dickmann Invitational at Navy's Wesley A. Brown Field House.
The Spartans earned a morning win over Navy, 25-22, 23-25, 25-18, 25-21, before struggling early in the match against Hartford later in the day. The Hawks easily won the first set, 25-6, before hanging on the rest of the match, 25-22, 23-25, 26-24.
Senior Beatriz Ferreira led the Spartans in both matches, tallying 11 kills against the Midshipmen and then 16 versus the Hawks. Senior Charlotte Armstead posted a combined 19 kills in the two matches, while redshirt sophomore Noelle Eagles added 14 and 12 digs, respectively.
Freshman Darcy Moore posted a combined 74 assists, but the Spartans struggled on offense, hitting .092 against Navy and .098 against Hartford. NSU had 62 total attack errors on the day.
Junior Coralie Jarema had eight blocks with seven kills against the Midshipmen, including three early blocks as the Spartans built a 9-2 lead to start the match. Navy called both of its timeouts for the set during that timeframe, and then used a 5-1 to get to within three.
The Spartans built the lead back up to seven, 19-12, but after Navy cut the deficit to four, 22-18, NSU called timeout to regroup. Ferreira added a kill and then a service error on the Midshipmen that gave NSU the first-set win.
Sophomore Jasmin Flowers threw down a kill to give NSU a 5-1 lead to start the second set, but Navy's 4-0 run a little later tied it up at 10-10. The Spartans grabbed the lead back thanks to another kill and a block from Flowers, and then forced Navy to call timeout up 20-17. An error on the Midshipmen found them down 23-21, but Carolyn Ewert knocked down a pair of kills during a 4-0 run to close the set for Navy.
NSU brushed off the second-set loss and scored the first three points of the third set, and following a 4-1 run by Navy, the Spartans pushed the lead to four, 11-7. Jarema had a block and a service ace to help NSU to an 18-12 lead, and a short time later back-to-back kills from Armstead and Ferreira put the Spartans in a comfortable 22-14 lead they did not relinquish.
In the fourth set, a 6-1 run allowed the Spartans to build a 10-5 lead, but the Midshipmen immediately used a 5-0 run to tie the set at 10-10. NSU had a small lead until a 6-1 run, capped by two service aces from freshman Jessica Johnson, extended that advantage to 22-15. A 6-1 run by the Midshipmen held off NSU for a short while until Ferreira and Jarema ended the match with two straight kills.
Flowers had six kills and five blocks against Navy.
Later in the afternoon, Hartford scored the first five points of the match, never committed an attack error and breezed to a 25-6 win in the first set over the Spartans. NSU, though, turned things around in the second set, building a 6-2 lead and stretching it to six, 11-5, after three straight kills from Ferreira. Later in the set, NSU saw a 15-13 lead quickly disappear thanks to a 7-1 run by the Hawks.
Two more kills from Ferreira kept the Spartans close, but Hartford was too much as the Hawks built a 2-0 lead in the match.
Down 4-2 in the third, a kill from redshirt sophomore Kylee Thiim sparked a 6-1 run to give the Spartans a three-point lead. The Spartans called timeout after Hartford chipped away at the lead and tied the set at 14-14. Jarema posted a pair of service aces and Armstead added two kills to give NSU a 20-17 lead. Johnson then broke a 22-22 tie with a pair of kills to help NSU take the third set.
A kill and block from Armstead gave the Spartans a 7-6 lead in the fourth set, but a 4-0 run by the Hawks gave them the advantage back. Down 17-13, NSU used a 6-0 run to earn the lead back, 19-17. Hartford tied the set at 20-20, and the teams went back and forth until a pair of errors on the Spartans handed the Hawks the match.
Jarema had 10 digs, seven kills and four service aces against Hartford, while Johnson had eight kills and sophomore Adriana Ramos had nine digs after posting 12 against Navy.
Hornets Swept By UNC Wilmington And High Point
WILMINGTON, N.C. - Junior Jessica Croucher and sophomore Edarkis Branch combined for 29 kills while senior Bel Fakaosi tallied 33 assists, but it wasn't enough Saturday as Delaware State was swept by UNC Wilmington and High Point on the final day of the UNCW Courtyard Wilmington Beach Bash, held at UNCW's Hanover Hall. For her efforts, Fakaosi was named to the All-Tournament team.
The Seahawks (2-0) took charge in the first match of the afternoon, downing the Hornets, 25-12, 25-19 and 25-14. UNCW never trailed in the first set and jumped out to an early 10-3 lead before closing the frame on a 9-2 run. The Seahawks finished the opening set with 16 kills and just two attack errors in 26 total attempts as it combined for a .538 attack clip in the set. Del State countered with a -.158 attack percentage, recording just two kills with five errors.
The Hornets held things closer in the second set, holding a lead of 7-6 before succumbing to a 5-0 Seahawk run. Down, 18-13, a DSU timeout sparked a 3-0 run to come within two, including a kill from senior Laisha Davis and block from Fakaosi and junior Brooke Redmon. UNCW scored six of the next nine points to take the 25-19 decision.
The Seahawks took a commanding lead in the third set, scoring 14 of the first 15 points. The Hornets countered with a 6-0 run led by freshman Jasmine Jackson's three aces to pull DSU within 21-11. UNCW kept their pace however and finished the set and match with a 25-14 victory.
Croucher and Branch tallied five kills apiece for the Hornets, who were limited to just 14 kills and a .028 hitting percentage for the match. Fakaosi finished the match with 12 assists, two digs and one kill.
Junior Christi Laite led UNCW with a match-high 16 kills and just three errors for a .619 hitting percentage.
Delaware State (0-3) wrapped up play in the tournament with a 20-25, 24-26, 17-25 loss to High Point (2-1). Jackson posted a match-high 11 digs in the contest while Branch and Fakaosi recorded team-high's of 10 kills and 21 assists, respectively.
The Hornets had things tied at 2-2 before the Panthers took an eight-point lead at 22-14. Kills from Redmon and freshman Alena Jung brought DSU within five at 23-18 before HPU finished things off at 25-20.
For the first time this season, the Hornets jumped out to a 6-1 lead, including a Davis kill and Fakaosi ace. The Panthers erased the Del State lead and eventually took a 20-16 advantage. Kills by Davis, Croucher and Branch tied things at 24-24 before HPU pulled out the 26-24 win.
In the third set, High Point posted a 9-5 lead and never looked back, eventually taking a six-point advantage at 22-16. The Panthers outhit the Hornets, .342 to .118 en route to the 25-17 win.
HPU sophomore Chelsea Davis finished the match with a team-high 11 kills and eight digs. Fellow sophomore Caity Farus hit .438 with eight kills and junior Michelle Chakirelis added nine kills.

NCCU Volleyball Rookie Anthony Earns All-Tournament Team Honors
DURHAM, N.C. - North Carolina Central University rookie outside hitter Christine Anthony topped the Eagles with 51 kills in four matches on Friday and Saturday to earn a spot on the NCCU Women's Volleyball Invitational All-Tournament Team.
Anthony also contributed 20 digs, seven service aces and five blocks during the weekend event.
As a team, NCCU suffered losses to UNC Greensboro and Liberty on Friday, then Bradley and Winthrop on Saturday, but the Eagles did manage to take sets from the only two undefeated teams (UNCG and Bradley) in the invitational. In fact, the set NCCU battled to win 33-31 over Bradley on Saturday morning was the only set the Braves dropped in three weekend matches.
Anthony recorded five kills and four digs in that set victory over Bradley, and finished that match with 14 kills and eight digs. NCCU sophomore Dayana Arrufat Rondon also posted 14 kills against the Braves, while junior Kalin Russell added 10 kills. Freshman setter Melissa Rabell Pineiro distributed a season-high 42 assists to go along with five digs and two service aces during the 3-1 (31-33, 25-18, 25-14, 25-23) loss to Bradley, which took advantage of its towering height at the net to amass 63 kills and nine total team blocks.
In the final match of the 2012 NCCU Invitational, Winthrop's steady .427 hitting percentage and 12 service aces resulted in a 3-0 (25-18, 25-13, 25-22) sweep of the Eagles. NCCU was paced by Arrufat Rondon's 12 kills, while Anthony added nine. Rabell Pineiro tallied 20 assists and six digs, while sophomore Ashley McCarthy also had six digs for the Eagles.

Lady Rattlers Fall To FIU, 3-1
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (Aug. 31) - Florida A&M dropped their third match of the Campus USA Credit Union Invitational as Florida International handed the Lady Rattlers a 3-1 (25-23, 21-25, 17-25, 20-25), Saturday afternoon at the O'Connell Center.
FAMU (0-3) had three Lady Rattlers to finish in double-digit kills as Yeisha Arcia finished with a double-double with team high 15 kills and 14 digs, followed by Pamela Barrera with 13 and Maria Ceccarelli with 10. Diana Gonzales dished out game high 40 assist, while FAMU had five Lady Rattlers to finish in double-digit digs with Karol Marques tallying a team high 22 digs.
FIU (1-2)had a pair of Panthers to finish with double-doubles as Lucia Castro tallied 20 kills and 12 digs, while Marija Prsa finished with 18 kills and 15 digs. Kimberly Smith added 11 kills, while Ashlee Hodgskin finished with at team high 38 assists, while four Panthers finished in double-digit digs.
In the first set, FIU jumped out a 10-5 lead, capped off by a FAMU attack error. The Lady Rattlers would go on a 17-10 run to tie the set at 22-22 on a FIU attack error.
A Lucia Castro kill would tie the set again at 23-23. FAMU would win set as they recorded a kill by Barrera and a FIU attack error for the 25-23 win.
In the second set, FAMU cut FIU's lead to 24-21 as they scored four straight points on three straight FIU attack errors, and a Gonzales service error. The Panthers would win the set 25-21 on Castro kill.
FAMU would then drop their next two sets as FIU won the third set 25-17 and the fourth set 25-20.

Hawks Win SFC Terrier Invite With Saturday Sweep
NEW YORK - UMES defeated St. Francis and Radford each in four sets on Saturday to win the SFC Terrier Invitational at the Genovesi Center. The Hawks move to 3-0, while the Terriers fell to 0-3 and the Highlanders go to 2-1.
This is the first away non-conference invitational that UMES was won outright since the Hawks won the Runnin' Bulldog Classic in 2009.
Iosia led the Hawks with 43 combined kills and 33 digs, earning double doubles in each match with 19 kills and 16 digs in the morning and 24 kills with 17 digs in the afternoon. Ibe hit .500 with 19 kills and just two attack errors, adding eight blocks. Lea'Aetoa hit .432 on the day, combining for 18 kills, five aces and eight blocks. Vaitai had 16 kills against St. Francis, totaling 23 on the day with 12 digs. Vicic tallied 93 assists and 17 digs.
Leading St. Francis in kills against UMES was a tie between Ali Long and Marina Georgieva with eight each, with the former adding nine digs. Maggie Niu had seven kills, while Slavica Stefanovic had five kills and six digs.
For the Highlanders today, Rachel Wiechecki led the team with a double double of 15 kills and 16 digs. James also achieved that feat with 12 kills and 10 digs. Hayes finished with eight kills and two blocks.

Savannah State Falls in Final Two Games of Hilton Invitational
ARLINGTON, Tex. - In the final two games for Savannah State in the University of Texas Arlington Hilton Invitational, the Lady Tigers fell to Stephen F. Austin 0-3, and to the University of Texas-Pan American 0-3.
In Saturday's first match, the Lady Jacks of Stephen F. Austin took a 1-0 set lead with a quick 25-7 score in the opening game. The Lady Jacks had 11 kills in the set.
SFA's offensive prowess continued into the second set as they quickly jumped out to a 9-4 lead. An attack error prompted a 7-0 run for the Lady Tigers midway through the game. A service ace from Asiha Williams cut the Lady Jacks lead to three points, 16-13. SFA answered with two kills.
Newcomer Jasmine Waite fired back with a kill on an assist from Ashlee Butler, setting the score at 18-14. An attack error from the Lady Jacks gave SSU their last point of the set, as two service aces and three kills propelled SFA to a 25-15 win.
In the final set, SFA jumped out a 15-3 lead behind several errors from the Lady Tigers. The powerful SFA offense held the Lady Tigers to only 11 points, as the Lady Jacks sealed up the match win with a 25-11 set win.
Waite and Chikia Jones each led the tigers with 4 kills apiece, while Bryana Gadis led in digs with nine. Keandra Lewis and Butler each added five digs.
In the second and final game Saturday, the Lady Tigers found themselves down two sets quick as the Lady Broncs' of UT Pan American beat SSU 25-9, and 25-10 in the opening two sets.
The Lady Tigers came alive midway through the third set. Down 3-9, a kill from Waite set up an 8-3 run that put SSU within three points of the Lady Bucs, 10-13.
A 10-4 run that began with a kill from Maria Kliefoth gave Pan American a commanding 23-14 lead, but the tenacious Lady Tigers continued to fight with a kill and two great serves from newcomer Justice Dilworth that resulted in a 3-0, short-lived run. A service error ended the game with a 25-17 Lady Broncs' win.
Gadis led the Lady Tigers with four kills and seven digs. Kaneisha Hamilton and Bridgette Stephens also had seven digs. Dilworth ended with three kills.
