The Savannah State volleyball team reported to campus today, and will open practice tomorrow, August 2 at 7 a.m.
The team will conduct regular practice each day during the week, which will include strength and conditioning, skill training, and team practice. The preseason camp concludes on August 21 with the annual Blue and Orange game scheduled for 6 p.m. at the historic Wilcox-Wiley Gymnasium.
The 2012 squad is composed of 10 returning lettermen, and three newcomers. The Lady Tigers will return six starters to the court.
Savannah State has two top returners in junior Bryana Gadis (OH) and senior Ashlee Butler (S). Gadis played in 81 games in 2011 and led the team in service aces with 23. She was second in digs with 140 and in kills with 94. Butler led the team in assists with 284 and was third in digs with 120.
Joining the top returners are Chikia Jones (RS/M) and Bianca Helton (MB), who both had stand out seasons in 2011. Jones was second in overall blocks (26) and second in kills (92). Helton led the team in kills (99), and blocks (38).
Coach Gamble added three new recruits to the 2012-13 campaign. Outside hitter Justice Dilworth, a Kingsland, Georgia native, comes to SSU from Camden County High School where she played in 86 games, recording 673 kills, 154 aces, and 260 digs. Bianca Brochu, outside hitter, played 92 games at Harris County High School in Hamilton, Georgia, recording 200 service aces, 405 kills, and 22 digs.
Rounding out the 2012 recruiting class is middle blocker Jasmine Waite. The Bakersfield, California native recorded 244 kills, 58 blocks, and 38 digs for the Bakersfield High School Drillers.
The Lady Tigers open the regular season on August 24 at the University of Texas-Arlington Hilton Invitational in Arlington, Texas. They open home play on August 31 with the Tiger Invitational.
