MEAC Teams Earn APR Public Recognition Awards

Morgan State's women's and men's tennis programs and Coppin State's women's tennis team were honored by the NCAA for earning Academic Progress Rate (APR) Public Recognition awards for the 2010-2011 academic year. The awards are given each year to teams with APR scores in the top 10 percent in their respective sports.

In addition to Morgan State and Coppin State's tennis programs, Bethune-Cookman, Maryland Eastern Shore and South Carolina State's golf teams were also honored.

"Having six teams to be recognized in the Top 10 percent in APR scores within the NCAA is indicative of the commitment to academics that the MEAC's Council of Chief Executive Officers (CCEOs) and our member institutions have provided to ensure that our student-athletes achieve their collegiate goal of securing a degree, said Commissioner Dennis Thomas."

"I would like to congratulate Bethune-Cookman, Coppin State, Maryland Eastern Shore, Morgan State and South Carolina State who were honored by the NCAA for achieving academic success during the 2010-11 school year. I further commend the athletic academic support staffs, athletic administrators, coaching staffs and student-athletes for their success in the classroom."

Morgan State men's and women's tennis teams posted perfect APR scores of 1000 during the 2010-11 season. The programs had received a score of 990 the past two seasons. Morgan State's tennis teams have steadily improved over the past seven years, with the women's program rising over 70 points.

Coppin State earned a perfect APR score for the second straight year in women's tennis to garner the accolade. The program improved their score by over 40 points to win their first award during the 2009-2010 academic year.

Bethune-Cookman and South Carolina State's women's golf team, along with Maryland Eastern Shore's men's golf program earned a perfect APR score and were also recognized. This is the third time the South Carolina State women's golf team has won the award and first since 2006.

MEAC sponsored athletic programs have been awarded the APR Public Recognition honor 31 times over the past seven years.

APR scores are a measure of classroom performance of student-athletes on every Division I team based on the eligibility and retention for each semester or quarter. The awards are based on the multi-year APR scores from the 2007-08, 2008-09, 2009-10 and 2010-11 academic years.
