MEAC Softball Championship Set For May 10-12

The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) will host its 2012 Softball Championship Thursday, May 10 through Saturday, May 12 at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex in Ormond Beach Florida.  The Delaware State University Lady Hornets and Savannah State University Lady Tigers finished as division leaders and will enter tournament play as the number one seeds.

Savannah State, who entered the conference just one year ago, clinched the southern divisional title after defeating South Carolina State in three straight games last weekend.  The Lady Tigers finished atop the standings in the south with a 12-3 MEAC record and 24-22 overall mark.

The defending MEAC champion Bethune-Cookman Lady Wildcats earned the second seed in the southern division, followed by Florida A&M and North Carolina A&T.

The Delaware State Lady Hornets earned their second straight northern divisional title after finishing with an 14-3 MEAC mark and 25-16-1 overall record.  The Lady Hornets will vie for their first softball championship title since 2008.

Coppin State clinched the second seed while Norfolk State is the third seed in the north.  The Hampton Lady Pirates earned the fourth and final seed.

The 2012 MEAC Softball Championship tournament gets underway Thursday, May 10 beginning at 10 a.m.

Savannah State (S1) will face Hampton (N4) while Delaware State (N1) will meet North Carolina A&T (S4) in the first games of the day.  Games three and four will include Coppin State (N2) against Florida A&M (S3) and Bethune-Cookman (S2) against Norfolk State (N3), both games will begin at 1:30 p.m.

Only the top four teams in each division can compete in the two-game elimination tournament and vie for the championship title.  Howard (8-10), Morgan State (6-12), Maryland Eastern Shore (0-17), South Carolina State (3-12) and North Carolina Central (1-13) have been eliminated from post season play.
