SC State athletics director Charlene Johnson has been appointed to the NCAA Division I Football Championship Committee. The purpose of the committee is to develop policies and procedures governing the administration and conduct of the NCAA Division I Football Championship.
Johnson's term on the committee begins immediately and will continue through September 01, 2015.
"I'm excited and pleased to have been asked to serve on the Division I Football Championship Committee," Johnson said after learning of her appointment. It's a very important NCAA committee, the work will be challenging and I look forward to making a contribution."
Johnson is in her eighth season as athletics director at SC State -- her alma mater - including one year as interim. She began her illustrious career in athletics at SC State in 1983 when she became the first woman to be appointed to a full-time coaching position as head volleyball coach and head women's tennis coach. she later served as an assistant on the Lady Bulldog basketball team.
The Allendale, SC native subsequently served the institution in several other capacities -- including associate athletics director, senior woman administrator and two terms as interim AD -- in establishing an outstanding legacy at the Orangeburg campus and beyond.
Five years ago, she became the first woman to serve as Chairperson of the Directors of Athletics in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. She has also served on several NCAA Committees, including Women's Volleyball, Women's Basketball, Memorial Resolution and Special Committee to study Rules Federation.
Johnson became a part of SC State history early on when, as a player, she helped the Lady Bulldogs capture the 1979 AIAW National Championship.
She was inducted into the SC State Athletics Hall of Fame in 1998 as an administrator and received special recognition in 2000 as a member of the 1979 AIAW National Championship team.
She earned both her bachelor's (1980) and master's (1987) from SC State.
