Savannah State, Florida A&M Advance In MEAC Softball Tournament

Top seeded Savannah State defeated North Carolina A&T, 7-4, while Florida A&M used extra innings to move past Norfolk State, 7-4, to advance in the 2012 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Softball Championship Tournament on Friday morning at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex.
 
The two teams will meet at 3 p.m. in the loser's bracket. The winner will advance to play the loser of the Hampton/Bethune-Cookman game.

Savannah State took the early lead over Hampton in the first game of the day.  Madison Hedderly hit a two-run homerun and an RBI single to center field by India Morgan extended the lead to 4-0 in the top of the fourth.

Sabrina Edmonds got the Lady Aggies on board with a solo homerun to left center in the bottom of the fourth. The Lady Tigers answered back with another run in the fifth off of an RBI single by Katherine Stewart. North Carolina A&T's Hope Fletcher scored off a throwing error for a 5-2 score after five innings.

Each team scored two runs in the seventh for the eventual 7-4 final.

Fletcher led North Carolina A&T going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Trenea Jones had three hits andTiffany Macklin added two hits for the Aggies.

Amber Hallman was 3-for-4 with two RBI for the Lady Tigers.

In the second game of the morning, Florida A&M scored three runs in the top of the 10th inning to aid them to victory.

Tenisha Dixon, who was 3-for-5 with two stolen bases, led the Lady Rattlers. Genesis Lopez was a perfect 2-for-2 with 2 RBI.
 

Kathy Cortez and Gipsy Ramirez finished with two hits each to lead the Spartans.

Jennifer Lindsey (14-8) earned the win allowing seven hits, two earned runs and striking out 10 batters.

Liz Riley (11-15) received the loss for the Norfolk State, allowing seven hits, three earned runs and striking out two in the six innings of relief.
