The defending Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Softball Champion Bethune-Cookman Lady Wildcats defeated North Carolina A&T, 6-1, in the 2012 MEAC Softball Tournament at Ormond Beach Sports Complex Thursday night.
The two teams battled in a scoreless pitcher's duel through four complete innings.
Shamaria Engram hit a two-run home run and Karina Romero scored twice to lead Bethune-Cookman (28-29) to tomorrow's semifinal appearance against Hampton at 1 p.m.
The Lady Aggies (16-34) will play Savannah State in an elimination game scheduled tomorrow at 10 a.m.
North Carolina A&T scored its lone run off an error by the Lady Wildcats. With one out in the seventh, B-CU third baseman Kelsey Rodney threw to first, however, it sailed wide right, allowing Zabresha Blakeney to reach second. Tiffany Macklin brought Blakeney home with a single up the middle.
B-CU pitcher Shanel Tolbert, who did not give up an earned run on Thursday night, got first baseman Alexandra McAfee to pop out, and Hope Fletcher to groundout, to end the game.
Tolbert (28-24) threw her second complete-game win of the day with no earned runs and a strikeout.
Engram went 2-for-3 at the plate with the home run and double, scoring two runs and logging her fourth three-RBI game of the year. Romero also finished 2-for-3 with and RBI and two runs scored.
