Savannah State Eliminates Delaware State From Softball Tourney

Savannah State scored two runs in the top of the seventh en route to a 6-4 victory over Delaware State in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Softball Championship Tournament Thursday afternoon at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex.

With the loss Delaware State, the top seed in the northern division, was eliminated from the tournament and concluded its season at 25-18-1.

Savannah State (25-23), the number one seed in the southern division,  scored four runs in the top of the fourth inning to take the 4-1 lead over the Lady Hornets.

DSU battled back in the bottom of the sixth with scores by Breanne Parr, Chelsea Stern and Taylor Pattillo to tie the game at four-all.

SSU's Madison Hedderly, an All-MEAC First Team selection, hit a home run to right field and scored along with 2012 MEAC Rookie of the Year Amber Hallman to capture the 6-4 victory.

Hedderly (17-11) allowed seven hits, four runs and one earned run while striking out three. 

Stephanie Sarris (8-5) received the loss for the Lady Hornets giving up six hits, two runs and two earned runs in 3.1 innings.

Savannah State will meet the loser of the Bethune-Cookman/North Carolina A&T game in the double-elimination bracket tomorrow at 10 a.m.

Admission for the 2012 MEAC Softball Championship is $7 for youth, students and seniors.  Discounted ticket packages for all three days can be purchased for $12.
