Bethune-Cookman Defeats Norfolk State To Advance In Softball Tourney

Bethune-Cookman defeated Norfolk State, 3-2, to advance in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Softball Championship Tournament Thursday afternoon at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex.

The two teams were scoreless until the fifth when  Norfolk State's (23-24) Danielle Wright and Morgan Boyd scored a run apiece to take the 2-0 lead.

All-MEAC First-Team selection Aurelia Gamch tied the game two-all for Bethune-Cookman (27-29) in the bottom of the fifth with a two-run home run.

Later in the same inning, Cesley Tafoya recorded an RBI single to lead the Lady Wildcats to the quarterfinal round of the tournament.

Karina Romero led Bethune-Cookman with 2-for-3 batting and Gamch went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.

NSU's Wright was 2-for-4 while Haley Ward aided the Spartans with two RBI.

Shanel Tolbert (27-24) collected the complete-game win for the Lady Wildcats with two strikeouts and two runs allowed.

The Spartans fall into the loser's bracket and will face the loser of Coppin State/Florida A&M at 4:30 p.m.

Bethune-Cookman will face North Carolina A&T, who defeated Delaware State earlier today, at 7 p.m.

Admission for the 2012 MEAC Softball Championship is $7 for youth, students and seniors.  Discounted ticket packages for all three days can be purchased for $12.
