Top Seeds Fall in MEAC Softball Tournament

Top Seeds Delaware State and Savannah State each fell in the opening round games of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Softball Championship Tournament Thursday morning at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex in Ormond Beach, Fla. 

In game one, Hope Fletcher drove in two runs and Zabresha Blakeney scored twice to lead North Carolina A&T to a 3-1 upset win over Delaware State.

The #4 Lady Aggies will face either Bethune-Cookman or Norfolk State on Thursday evening at 7 p.m.

Breanne Parr scored the lone run for Lady Hornets and was 2-for-4 with a double. 2012 MEAC Player of the Year Jordan Reid went 2-for-3 with a stolen base

N.C. A&T's Ashira Dobison gave up eight hits, one hit and one unearned run in 7.0 innings to earn the victory. Casey Beighley took the loss with two hits, one run and unearned run  in four innings.

In game two, Hampton upset top seeded Savannah State, 5-4, in eight innings of play. The win was the first tournament victory for the Lady Pirates since 2009.

Hampton (24-31) will take on either Coppin State or Florida A&M on Thursday at 7 p.m. in the quarterfinal round.

Senior Travonna Byrd went six innings for the Lady Pirates, giving up four hits and one earned run. She struck out two, while Jailynn Jackson fanned five in her two innings of work.

Margaret Wilkins went 3-for-4 at the plate, driving in two runs and scoring once, while Carla Trimble was 2-for-4 at the plate.

Katherine Stewart led Savannah State (24-23) with two RBI while Destiny Webster added two hits. 

All-MEAC First Team performer Madison Hedderly took the loss allowing four errors, five runs and striking out six in 8.0 innings.

Savannah State will face Delaware State in the double-elimination bracket at 4:30 p.m.

Admission for the 2012 MEAC Softball Championship is $7 for youth, students and seniors.  Discounted ticket packages for all three days can be purchased for $12.
