Bethune-Cookman Completes Sweep of South Carolina State, 13-0

ORANGEBURG, S.C. - Aurelia Gamch and Kelsey Rodney each had three RBI, with five of those coming in a 10-run fifth inning as Bethune-Cookman defeated South Carolina State 13-0 in a MEAC Southern Division game Saturday.

The Wildcats (20-21 overall, 6-0 MEAC) concluded the three-game sweep of the Lady Bulldogs (11-21,0-6) for their 14th victory in the last 15 games and 21st consecutive conference regular season win dating back to 2010.

Gamch's RBI single started the ten-run outburst and she later added a two-run single. Rodney, who homered for B-CU's first run in the second, also had a two-run single.

Sabrina Ferguson and Karina Romero each went 2-3 with two RBI for B-CU, while Michelle Banuelos-Smith was 2-3 with one RBI. Shanel Tolbert threw a two-hitter for her second shutout of the series as well as her 20th win of the year.

B-CU hosts North Florida for a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday beginning at 2 p.m. in Sunnyland Park.

Cortez Leads NSU to Series Sweep of UMES, 4-2

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Sophomore catcher Kathy Cortez went 3-for-4 and drove in two runs to lead the Norfolk State softball team to a 4-2 win and a series sweep of UMES Saturday afternoon at Hawks Field.

The Spartans moved to 15-17 overall and 4-2 in MEAC play following a pair of shutout victories Friday over the Lady Hawks. NSU pounded out 11 hits on Saturday and used a three-run third inning to take the lead for good. UMES remained winless on the season at 0-26 overall, 0-9 in conference play.

After tying the school record with 12 strikeouts in the first game on Friday, Jamie Schulle added five more K's on Saturday while allowing just three hits over 3.2 innings. Liz Riley walked four and gave up two earned runs on six hits in 3.1 innings of relief.

Carmen Gurrola (0-26) pitched all seven innings for the Hawks, allowing 11 hits and four earned runs with no walks and three strikeouts. The teams combined to leave 20 runners on base, including two runners in each of the second, third, fourth and seventh innings for the Hawks.

Lady Rattlers Split A Doubleheader With North Carolina A&T

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (April 7)- Florida A&M split a doubleheader with North Carolina A&T as the Lady Aggies won game one 9-5 and the Lady Rattlers bounce back in game two as they won  13-0,Saturday afternoon at Lady Rattlers Softball Complex.

N.C. A&T (12-19, 5-1 MEAC) finished the contest with 13 hits as Juanita Jernigan led the Lady Aggies from the plate with three hits in four at-bats, while driving in one run and scoring one run.

FAMU (16-25, 2-5 MEAC) tallied 10 hits in the contest as three Lady Rattlers finished with two hits each.

Ashira Dobison (11-11) picked up the win for the Lady Aggies as she pitched seven innings, allowing 10 hit, three earned runs in the 33 batters she faced, while Addie Dozier (1-3) received the loss as she pitched one and one-third inning in relief, allowing two hits, two earned runs and striking out two in the nine batters she faced.

  

In game two, FAMU pound out 15 hits, while N.C.A&T finished with 3.

Donaldson led the Lady Rattlers from the plate as she tallied three hits in four at-bats, while driving in two runs and scoring one to lead FAMU.

The Lady Aggies had three players to finish with one hit each.

Jennifer Lindsey (7-7) picked up the win for the Lady Rattlers as she pitched five innings, giving up three hits and striking out three in the 22 batters she faced, while Alexandria McAfee (1-8) pitched four inning, giving up 15 hits and 10 earned runs.
