NSU?s Marks Wins in Singles, Doubles in 6-1 Loss to Richmond

Senior Ben Marks won his singles and doubles matches for the Norfolk State men's tennis team during a 6-1 loss to Richmond Friday afternoon at the Westhampton Tennis Complex.

Marks earned NSU's lone point on the day with his win at No. 2 singles, and he combined with senior Arsenio Culver to pick up the victory at No. 1 doubles. NSU fell to 12-12 overall in the last non-conference match of the season, while the Spiders improved to 11-8.

The duo needed an extra effort to pick up the win in doubles play, as Culver and Marks won the tiebreaker, 7-3, for the 9-8 win over the Richmond pair of Aaron Wicker and Dylan Trent.

Richmond, though, won the doubles point with victories in the No. 2 and 3 matches. Paul Nahon III and Ethan Dunbar downed the Spartan duo of senior Christian Romanzini and sophomore Kent Austin, 8-2, at the second position. Sebastien Fauchet and Dylan Schrode defeated freshmen Igor Braga and Shaheed Mourillon-Swift at the third spot by a closer margin, 8-6.

Marks was also victorious over Fauchet at the No. 2 singles position, 7-5, 6-1. His doubles partner nearly joined him in the win column at the top spot in the lineup, but after winning the first set 7-6, Culver fell to Dunbar in the second set, 6-0. Dunbar then pulled out the win with a 10-6 victory in the third-set tiebreaker to end Culver's 10-match win streak.

Freshman Daniel Grauel gave it a ride in his match with Nahon at the No. 4 spot, but after Nahon squeaked by with a 7-4 first-set tiebreaker victory, he won the match with a 6-4 win in the second set over Grauel. At the No. 3 spot, meanwhile, Braga fell to Jesse Feder, 6-0, 6-3.
