Softball Recap: April 24

Mount St. Mary's Sweeps Coppin State

BALTIMORE
-- Cat Clifford drove in the winning run with a sixth-inning double and Mount St. Mary's rallied to defeat Coppin State 2-1 and complete a doubleheader sweep of the Eagles on Tuesday at the Coppin State Softball Field.

The Mountaineers (15-28) won the first game 15-0 as Nicole Pagano and Danni Cummings combined to toss a no-hitter and Clifford had two hits and drove in four runs.

The Eagles (15-19) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning of the second game.

Heather Josker doubled to center field to lead off the inning and Nicole Boggs followed with a walk. Samantha Denlinger advanced both base runners with a sacrifice bunt.

Josker then scampered home with the first run of the game when Mount St. Mary's starter Amanda Sadowl uncorked a wild pitch.

That appeared to be enough offense for Coppin State starter Paige Arnold who sailed through the first five innings without allowing a hit, but the Mountaineers rallied in the sixth inning.

With one out, Erin Leddy recorded Mount St. Mary's first hit of the game, a single to center. With two outs, Liz Chritiansen hit a ball to the base of the wall in center which brought home Leddy with the tying run.

Clifford then followed with a double to right that scored pinch-runner Kendra Hayward and put the Mountaineers ahead 2-1.

The Eagles mounted a challenge in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Patrice Williams hit a one-out single and advanced to second when Candice Van Horn reached on an infield single.

Sadowl was able to get a foul out and a strikeout to end the game pushing the Mountaineers winning streak to four straight.

The first game was all Mount St. Mary's as Pagano and Cummings combined to no-hit Coppin State and the Mountaineers jumped out to a 10-0 lead after three innings by taking advantage of six CSU errors.
