NORFOLK, Va. - Hampton University senior guard Jericka Jenkins was named First Team All-State by the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) in the University Division on Wednesday.
It was Jenkins' second honor of the day; she was also named BoxToRow.com's Most Valuable Player.
Jenkins (Lancaster, Texas), a First Team All-MEAC selection and MEAC Tournament Most Outstanding Player, led the team in scoring this past season with 13.8 points a night, while also sitting fifth in the nation in assists per game (7.1) and sixth in assist-turnover ratio (2.4).
For the season, Jenkins scored in double figures 22 times - including a season-high 26 against Maryland Baltimore County on Dec. 10. Her 221 assists this past season are a program Div. I single-season record (and second most in overall program history).
Jenkins, who in 2010-11 was a VaSID Second Team All-State selection, led the MEAC with 38.5 minutes per game this past season.
She is also just the second Lady Pirate (and only player in program Div. I history) to record 1,000 career points and 500 career assists. She sits seventh in school history with 1,385 career points and second with 620 career assists.
She led the Lady Pirates to a 26-5 record in 2011-12 - a program Div. I record for most wins in a season - and the team's second straight MEAC regular-season title. Jenkins also led Hampton to its third straight MEAC Tournament championship and corresponding NCAA Tournament appearance.
Jenkins played in the MEAC Tournament title game in each of her four years at Hampton.
Joining Jenkins on the VaSID First Team were Courtney Hurt of Virginia Commonwealth (the VaSID Player of the Year), Liberty's Devon Brown, George Mason's Taleia Moton and Abby Oliver of Richmond.
Liberty's Reagan Miller was named VaSID Rookie of the Year, while James Madison's Kenny Brooks earned Coach of the Year honors.
