ARLINGTON, Texas - In the latest Bowling Writers Association of America (BWAA)
poll the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) was ranked 15th with 93 points,
down from 12th in the previous poll. The Hawks are one of just two NCAA schools
ranked in the top 20 of the primarily college bowling team poll.
Lindenwood, who the Hawks topped in last season's national championship final, 2-1, is
second, down from first with 368 points. Wichita State is the new number one team with
372 points. Pikeville, Robert Morris (Ill.), and Webber International rounded out the
writer's poll top five. Fellow NCAA team Adrian, who bowls a heavy college bowling
schedule is 20th. Other NCAA teams did however receive votes. MEAC team Norfolk
State along with Kutztown and Wisconsin-Whitewater were all listed.
As one of only two women's bowling programs in the nation to win both an NCAA and
USBC Collegiate Championship and the only to win both in the same year, the Lady
Hawks are ranked in several polls each season. They are currently at fifth in both the
National Tenpins Coaches Association (NTCA) coaches and media polls.
The Hawks just clinched the MEAC Northern Division title, their third overall and stand
at 89-29 and 29-1 (MEAC).
To be included in the writer's poll, teams must be members of the USBC and have
competed in sanctioned events throughout the season. Many of the NCAA teams ranked
in the NTCA polls are not members of the USBC, thus excluding them from the polls.
This is the second poll of three published each season by the BWAA.
