Delaware State forced nine innings in the first game of a doubleheader before eventually falling to Jacksonville, 4-3, and was a completely different team in the nightcap as the Hornets were shutout, 15-0, in five innings Wednesday evening.
The Dolphins got on board first in game one, as senior Brittany Eppley knocked out an RBI doule down the right field line in the bottom of the second inning.
DSU responded in the top of the third with a run of their own, as senior Chelsea Stern led off the inning with a double to left field and fellow senior Jordan Reid followed with a single to left center. Stern then tied the game at 1-1 with a fielder's choice from another senior, Rachel Carroll.
The Hornets took a 3-1 lead in the fifth as senior Casey Beighley put a two-RBI double down to left field to score Carroll and senior Tawny Reeger.
The two teams stayed off the board in the seventh as the game was sent into extra innings.
Jacksonville's Sarah Sigrest came on in relief for the Dolphins in the top of the eighth and allowed no Hornet hits or runs in addition to four strikeouts over the next 2.0 innings, for her eighth victory of the year.
JU was able to break through and win the game in the bottom of the ninth. Freshman Codi Kelly started the inning on second base per the international tie-breaker rules and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from Eppley. Warner then singled to left field, scoring Kelly for the walk-off RBI.
Sarris took the loss in the game, going 3.1 innings and giving up three hits, two runs (one earned) and two walks in addition to one strikeout.
Reeger was the lone Hornet to record multiple hits as she finished game one 2-for-4 with one run scored. Beighley ended the game 1-for-4 with two RBI.
The Dolphins kept the momentum rolling in the second game and Delaware State was unable to find an answer for JU's Sigrest, who started game two. Sigrest pitched a shutout for her second win of the night and pushed her scoreless innings streak to 27 consecutive innings as Jacksonville downed the Hornets, 15-0, in the second game.
DSU recorded just four hits in the nightcap, including two from sophomore Ashlyn Campbell.
JU posted 12 hits, with Kayla Ouellet leading the way, going 3-for-4 in the game.
With the loss, the Hornets fall to 3-5 on the year while the Dolphins improve to 12-9 overall. Jacksonville has won five straight and seven of their last eight.
