Hampton Softball Beats Morgan State In Extra Innings

HAMPTON, Va. -Hampton beat Morgan State in 10 innings, taking the finale of the three-game set 2-1 in walkoff fashion on Sunday at the Lady Pirates Softball Complex.

The Lady Pirates (13-18, 2-1 MEAC) have now matched last season's win total and have won nine of their last 15 games. Hampton took two of three games from Morgan State over the weekend.

With international tiebreaker rules taking effect in the 10th inning, the Lady Pirates opened the bottom of the frame with freshman Bianca Vallejo on second base. She moved to third on a passed ball, before senior Sharde' Estep walked.

Junior Shine Huwe smacked a double off the left-field wall to score Vallejo and give the Lady Pirates the win.

The game was a pitchers' duel for the first six innings, and freshman Jailynn Jackson started the game with 3.2 no-hit innings. Morgan State didn't score until the top of the seventh inning, when Shareday Christina hit an RBI single to right field.

The Lady Pirates tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the frame; after junior Carla Trimble doubled to right field, junior Nina Ferguson singled up the middle to bring her home.

Jackson went all 10 innings in picking up her sixth win of the season, striking out eight and giving up just five hits and the one earned run.

She is now 6-8 on the season.

Ferguson and Jackson each went 2-for-4 at the plate, while Ferguson and Huwe each had one RBI. Huwe was also hit by a pitch three times in the game.
