Four Delaware State softball players recorded multiple hits in each game and Hornet pitchers allowed just one earned run as DSU swept Cornell, 3-1 and 8-2, Friday afternoon at the Hornets Nest.
Senior Jordan Reid went 3-for-5 on the day with four runs scored, a double and stolen base while fellow senior Rachel Carroll went 3-for-4 with two RBI, a run scored and a stolen base. Senior Casey Beighley, the game one starting pitcher who eventually moved to right field, finished the day 2-for-5 with a run and RBI.
The Big Red picked up their lone run of the game with a Clare Feely homer over the leftfield fence in the top of the third.
Beighley earned her third win of the season as she went 4.2 innings, giving up just two hits, one run (earned) and two walks while striking out two. Sophomore Stephanie Sarris picked up her first save of the year, allowing just one hit in 2.1 innings of work.
Jenna Stoller took the loss for the Big Red, giving up four hits, three runs (two earned) while striking out three in 3.0 innings.
The Hornets got back to the basics in game two, manufacturing runs with small ball.
Reid led off the bottom of the first with a bunt single, stole second, moved to third with a Reeger groundout and scored on a sacrifice bunt from Martello to give DSU a 1-0 lead.
Carroll singled to right field to lead off the bottom of the second and advanced to second on a sac bunt from Doherty. Freshman Bria Green moved Carroll to third with a single up the middle. Carroll then scored as Green got caught in a rundown in an attempt to steal second.
Delaware State had another big third inning in game two, scoring five runs on four hits and one Big Red error to take a 7-0 advantage.
With one out and the bases loaded, Carroll knocked a two RBI single just past the third baseman to allow Reeger and Reid to score. Doherty reached on a fielder's choice and moved to second on an errant throw to first base from shortstop Clare Feely as Beighley advanced to third and then scored.
Green came up big again as she singled to right field to allow Doherty to score before the end of the inning.
The Big Red got on board in the top of the sixth, scoring two runs on two hits and two DSU errors.
The Hornets responded in the bottom of the frame with a sac fly from Green to score Doherty.
Green, who finished the game 2-for-2 with two RBI, closed out the game for Delaware State with a diving catch in right field as the Hornets won, 8-2.
Sophomore Rachel Meagley earned her first win of her DSU career, going 5.0 innings strong, giving up just two hits while striking out two.
Brittany Sutton took the loss for Cornell, giving up seven runs (five earned) and seven hits while striking out one.
