SC State Drops Softball Doubleheader to Gardner-Webb

Orangeburg, S.C.-The SC State women's softball team fell to Gardner-Webb, 4-13 and 0-9, in a non-conference softball doubleheader. With the loss, the Lady Bulldogs fall to 9-15 on the season.

Gardner-Webb (12-14) scored 11 runs off 11 hits and two errors in the top of the second inning to take command of Game One.  The Runnin' Bulldogs scored two additional runs in the top of the third before SC State's offense came to life.  Senior Raven Johnson got the Lady Bulldogs offense going with a leadoff single in the bottom of the third.  SC State saw its next four batters reach base (two singles and two hit-by-pitch) which led to four runs cutting the deficit to nine.  The Lady Bulldogs picked up one additional hit in the bottom of the fifth, but was unable to turn it into a run, thus dropping Game One 4-13, in five innings.

Game Two belonged solely to Gardner-Webb as they scored nine runs off 10 hits while allowing just two SC State hits.  The Runnin' Bulldogs scored three runs in the first and fourth innings coupled with one run in the third and two runs in the sixth en route to its 9-0 Game Two victory.

Kellie Beres picked up the Game One victory and Cindy Boomhower was the Game Two winner for Gardner-Webb.  Vianney Gomez was the loser in both games for SC State.

SOFTBALL SWEEPS DOUBLEHEADER AGAINST GEORGE MASON

HAMPTON, Va.-Hampton won both games of its doubleheader against George Mason on Wednesday at the Lady Pirates Softball Complex, taking the first game 10-5 before winning the second game 3-2 in walk-off fashion.

The Lady Pirates (8-14) have won four of their last six games.

Hampton fell behind 1-0 after the top of the first inning in the first game, but bounced back with five runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 5-1 lead. Senior Sharde' Estep singled home three runs to get the Lady Pirates on the board, before senior Brooke Boykin and junior Nina Ferguson added RBI singles of their own.

After the Patriots scored a run in the top of the third to cut Hampton's lead to 5-2, the Lady Pirates answered with a run in the bottom of the frame. Senior Travonna Byrd led off the inning with a double down the left field line, before advancing to second on a groundout.

Boykin then singled Byrd home to put Hampton up 6-2.

Another George Mason run came across in the top of the fourth, but the Lady Pirates broke the game open in the bottom of the inning by pushing across four runs. Junior Carla Trimble led off the inning with a home run to center field, her second of the season, before senior Bre'Anna Brown singled home another run.

Boykin then doubled in yet another run, before Ferguson pushed across one more with a single up the middle to give Hampton a 10-3 lead.

The Patriots scored once each in the fifth and seventh innings.

Byrd went 6.2 innings in picking up her fourth win of the season, striking out four and giving up just one earned run.

Boykin went 4-for-4 at the plate, driving in three runs. Ferguson went 4-for-5, driving in a pair of runs, while Estep also pushed across three runs to go along with a 2-for-4 effort at the plate.

In all, the Lady Pirates had a season-high 19 hits in the first game.

  

Freshman Jailynn Jackson went the distance in picking up her fourth win of the season, striking out four and walking just one. She scattered five hits and two earned runs.

Brown had two hits, while Ferguson drove in two runs.

Boykin went a combined 5-for-7 at the plate in the doubleheader with three RBIs, while Ferguson also went 5-for-7 with four runs driven in.

Siena Softball Takes Two from Coppin State

BALTIMORE -- Paige Arnold had four hits and drove in two runs and Patrice Williams added two RBI, but Siena swept a doubleheader from Coppin State on Wednesday at the Coppin State Softball Field.

Arnold had two hits in each game, including a home run in game one, and Williams had two hits and two runs batted in during the second game, but Siena posted a 5-3 victory in the opener and completed the sweep with a 9-4 win in game two.

The Saints (5-5) got five RBI from Shannon Jones and recorded 20 hits in the doubleheader.

Coppin State fell to 5-9 overall on the season with the two losses.

GREENSBORO, N.C. - North Carolina A&T used a walk-off single for a 3-2 win in Game 1, but the Norfolk State softball team earned a split of the doubleheader with a 6-5 victory in Game 2 Wednesday afternoon at the Lady Aggies Softball Complex.

Hope Fletcher's game-winning single off relief pitcher Liz Riley in the bottom of the seventh completed the three-run comeback for the Aggies (5-13), who scored a run in each of the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to overcome a 2-0 deficit. Freshman Robyn Mitchell hit an RBI groundout in the top of the seventh in the second game to break a 5-5 tie and prevent the Aggie sweep.

After pitching well but getting the no-decision in the first game, sophomore Jamie Schulle earned the win in relief in Game 2 for NSU (8-6), allowing two runs, one earned, on seven hits in 4.1 innings of work. Schulle (5-2) started the first game and allowed two earned runs on four hits with five strikeouts in 5.1 innings.

Freshman Alina Moriarty went a combined 4-for-7 with one run and one RBI on the day, while junior Gipsy Ramirez added two hits in Game 1 and freshman Haley Ward did the same in the nightcap.

 McAfee (0-5) gave up six runs, but just two earned, on eight hits in all seven innings in the loss.


Riley suffered the loss, dropping her record to 3-4 on the year, after allowing one earned run on four hits in one total inning. Ashira Dobison (5-8) scattered eight hits in seven innings for the win.
