Bethune-Cookman Battles but Falls to Lady Aggies in OT, 63-60
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - After battling it out with the Lady Aggies the entirety of regulation, B-CU's opportunity to avenge the lopsided loss in North Carolina slipped away in the closing seconds of overtime, Saturday afternoon at Moore Gymnasium, taking the overtime defeat by North Carolina A&T, 63-60.
Overtime was a defensive affair, much like the rest of the game, but free throws proved to be the ultimate decider, as the Lady Aggies made three of their seven opportunities at the charity stripe, while B-CU earned none. NC A&T took a two-point lead with just over one minute to go, and the Lady Wildcats couldn't get a shot to fall. A foul with 19 on the clock pushed the lead to three on Amber Calvin's free throw, but B-CU's perimeter shots didn't find their mark to send it to the second OT, falling to North Carolina A&T, 63-60.
Demetria Frank looked more comfortable in attacking the basket and was hard for the Lady Aggies to contain, hitting 5-of-13 and all nine of her free throws for a team-high 19 points. Elum went 4-of-7 from long range (and 6-of-14) overall for 18 points.
The Lady Wildcats defense produced 10 steals on 26 A&T turnovers, and offensively they protected the ball well, logging 17 turnovers as a team. Meanwhile, B-CU turned in one of its best free throw performances of the year, hitting 15-of-17 for and 88.2 percent performance.
The Lady Aggies were led by JaQuayla Berry with a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds, as she came on strong in the first half. Berry worked in tandem with Nikia Gorham (15 points) to use their size in the paint.
